Lift-Off Festival takes place in London, Manchester, LA, Paris, New York, Sydney, Amsterdam, Hong Kong and Tokyo – and the Vancouver festival promise to showcase the best of Canada. Celebrating global independent filmmaking, and featuring a mix of genres from homegrown Vancouver film makers and Canadian talent – as well as several worldwide entrants.

UK based festival founders James Bradley and Ben Pohlman started the Lift-Off Network from small beginnings, with the first London Lift-Off Film Festival six years ago. Bradley commented; “Vancouver Lift-Off has been 3 years in the making. Since the very beginning we have been utterly astounded by the sheer level of quality-filmmaking coming out of Canada. The country is having a golden age and we are absolutely thrilled to be part of the many institutions supporting it. Our aim is to help build a greater global audience for this exceptional Canadian based work – it’s a real honour to finally say that we now have a permanent Lift-Off showcase in Canada!” ”

During the Vancouver Lift-Off Film Festival the attending audience will be asked to score each film shown via a feedback form. This will not only form the basis of the results for winners of the festival, but will also be sent to each filmmaker, providing essential audience feedback; a unique benefit not offered by any other film festival.

Each winning film will then be screened at other subsequent global events, with the ultimate aim to give filmmakers the best exposure on a worldwide platform as they embark on their continued artistic journeys.

Winners from the previous 2016 Lift-Off events are already programmed for screenings at Vancouver Lift-Off including; Finding Beauty in the Rubble directed by Paul Nethercott , Japan, the winner at Tokyo Lift-Off 2016, Best Short Documentary.

Oscar shortlisted ‘Contrapelo’ directed by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer. Contrapelo won both audience choice awards at Liverpool and Tokyo Lift-Off, for Best Short Live Action Narrative. Set in Mexico this short film explores pride, self-respect and craftsmanship – in the face of a Mexican criminal underworld kingpin.
