The annual feast of theatre known as the Vancouver Fringe Festival begins next week. Besides over 100 shows to choose from, the fest has a few events helping kick off the festival. Here are some dates prospective Fringe-goers will want to know.

Sept. 6: Opening Night (Performance Works, 1218 Cartwright St, Granville Island, 7-10 p.m.) – Fringe favourite Butt Kapinski performs. During the pre-show reception, you’ll have a chance to meet Fringe artists and fellow Fringe-lovers. The reception includes complementary hors d’oeuvres, artisanal spirits, wine, beer and an auction. Sept. 6 is also the date that the box office (1398 Cartwright St., Granville Island) opens. Box office dates are Sept 6-18, 4-9 p.m. on weekdays and noon-9 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

Sept. 8: The Fringe-For-All (10 p.m., Performance Works) – See 40 of this year’s artists preview their shows. Rub shoulders with clowns, jugglers and other theatre types from all over the world. David C. Jones hosts. Tickets available for $10 online at tickets.vancouverfringe.com or, if it doesn’t sell out first, at the door.

Sept. 10: Smut Slam (10:30 p.m. at Performance Works) – Have a sex story you’re dying to share? Sign up for Smut Slam, the open mic show that means never having to say you’re sorry… for running out of condoms. It’s a show where anyone and everyone can either tell their sexy stories (a maximum length of five minutes is encouraged) on stage or submit anonymous questions and confessions in the infamous F***BUCKET. Cameryn Moore (writer, producer, and performer of Nerdf***er) hosts. Full details here.

Sept. 8-18: The Vancouver Fringe Festival. These are the dates of the actual Fringe. The Fringe Bar at Ocean Art Works (1531 Johnston St.) on Granville Island will also be open during the festival. Performers include Barbara Adler and Ten Thousand Wolves, Sun Belt, Jody Glenham and the Dreamers, and Tonye Aganaba. For the full lineup, go here.
