Vancouver Screen Scene: Deadpool 2, UnReal, Menendez brothers, The 100, and more

The foul-mouthed sequel to the foul-mouth Deadpool, starring the Ryan Reynolds, will be shot in not-so-foul Vancouver.

Well, true believers, the dates have been confirmed for when a certain merc with a mouth will be back to wreak havoc in town (and shut down a few streets).

Also in this roundup, we take a look at a series about TV imitating reality TV, a TV movie about an unsettling murder case from the 1980s, and more.

Thanks to Ryan Reynolds, the motormouthing antihero otherwise known as Deadpool is returning the scene of the crime to start shooting (both literally and in terms of on-screen action) the sequel to the insanely successful Deadpool in Reynold’s hometown on May 1.

Deadpool 2 will be directed by David Leitch (John Wick), now that Tim Miller, who shot the first film, parted ways with the project.

Don’t mess with Ryan Reynolds in Deadpool

Although Deadpool was nominated for two Golden Globe Awards, it went home emptyhanded. (Well, we know what wisecrack Deadpool would make here about that but we’ll leave that up to your, um, imagination.)

Shiri Appleby

Meanwhile, it’s art imitating reality TV (or TV imitating TV) when UnReal starts shooting Season 3 on February 1 and continues until May 11.

The drama series delves into the world of a dating competition show in which a producer (Shiri Appleby) has to do whatever it takes—including using lies and manipulation—to get the contestants to create the drama (and ratings) that her executive producer (Constance Zimmer) wants.

However, with affairs, bad behaviour, backstabbing, substance abuse, and general chaos (which basically describes every workplace), there’s as much drama behind the scenes is as there is on screen.

On a more grisly note of real-life drama, the murder of two Beverly Hills parents by their own sons in the late 1980s continues to hold public interest in 2017.

On the evening of August 20, 1989, Lyle and Erik Menéndez murdered their parents, who they claimed were abusive, with a shotgun in their own home. After highly publicized trials, the brothers were sentenced to life imprisonment in 1996.

While ABC recently aired a new documentary, Truth and Lies: The Menendez Brothers—American Sons, American Murderers, on January 5, a new TV movie is set to be filmed about the parricide that shocked North America.

With the working title Untitled Menendez Brothers Project, the new project will be codirected by Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato.

The filming starts, ironically, on February 14 and continues until March 9. The cast hasn’t been announced yet.

Elsewhere in the city, Date My Dad kicks into production today (January 17) and continues shooting Season 1 until April 12.

The dramedy series follows what happens when former pro baseball player Ricky Parker, whose wife has passed away, finds out his three teen daughters have set him up to get back in the dating game.

The cast is yet to be announced so stay tuned for details to come.

Eliza Taylor

A day after that series starts up, another TV series is ending.

The sci-fi series The 100 wraps up production on Season 4 on Wednesday (January 18).

The series follows the adventures of a group of juvenile prisoners who are sent from a survivor camp in a space station back to a post-apocalyptic Earth to determine if the planet is inhabitable.

The cast includes Eliza Taylor, Paige Turco, Bob Morley, Devon Bostick, Marie Avgeropoulos, Christopher Larkin, and more.

The good news for fans is that Season 4 is right around the corner—it’s set to hit the airwaves on February 1.

Bob Morley

Well, that’s it for this week, but there are plenty more shows about to either starting up and wrapping up so check back in with us next week for more on what’s shooting in Hollywood North.
