18 Step Out Destination Walks for Family Day

One of the best ways to explore any City is on foot, and I am proud to say, Vancouver is no exception!  A city of natural treasures, Vancouver consistently ranks as one of Canada’s most walkable cities and Family Day is a perfect excuse to embark on a self-propelled adventure.  There is no need to leave civilization behind to appreciate a nature walk.  Simply put, just lace up and go outside!  No special gear required. Once there, challenge yourself, friends and family, to disconnect to reconnect.  Life will slow down. Observe – smell, listen, touch and enjoy!

My favourite walking companions are the little ones. Why? Kids are naturally curious.  Be brave and allow them to lead the walk. I guarantee you will be surprised at what they notice and discover.  Changing weather patterns, birds, plants, trees, wildlife, subtle colours, wriggling worms, and mud pies are all there for the taking. Of course, when little ones have the reins and the power, you may find yourself stopping to smell the roses, and other “stuff” too!  Seldom a nature exploration goes by when one of the munchkins doesn’t uncover something icky or smelly!

Wondering where to begin? From the world famous Stanley Park Seawall and Beaver Lake to lesser known neighbourhood walks, there are ample opportunities to explore Vancouver’s natural world.  In fact, the City of Vancouver has identified 18 Step Out Destination Walks:

Over the years, I have enjoyed each and every one of these walks, and truthfully, it would be difficult to pick a favourite.  Leave it to say; there are no bad choices.  Enjoy your walk and Happy Family Day!
