Five reasons to check out VIFF LIVE

This year, the 2017 Vancouver International Film Festival (on until Oct 13) is stepping up its live music component in a big way. There are two nights of bills featuring local musicians, an evening of live music and visuals, and an after-party (Oct. 5, featuring hip-hop artist Nav). All of the shows take place at Fortune Sound Club (147 E. Pender St.).

Here’s a look at some of the scheduled performances.

1. Dead Shack. The series includes an evening of visuals with live music accompaniment. The Oct. 4 lineup includes local band Humans playing the score to band member Peter Ricq’s new zombie comedy Dead Shack (“for fans of chuckle-happy zombie schlock,” according to slashfilm.com), with visuals by VJ Genki Nishida.

2. Little Destroyer. This hard-rockin’ local trio has been playing around town quite a bit. If songs like Bad Cell are any indication, the band’s electro-pop will be hard to top when they play an Oct. 3 lineup of local acts.

Little Destroyer is one of the band’s playing VIFF LIVE’s Oct. 3 lineup at Fortune Sound Club.

3. Louise Burns. Another hard-working local talent, Burns’ melodic, jangley sixties-inspired pop will have toes tapping and heads nodding (also Oct. 3). Earlier this year, she released her third album, Young Mopes.

4. Horsepowar. The local Richmond-based rapper has been pegged as one of Vancouver’s next big things for awhile. She’ll demonstrate what all the influencers are on about when she performs songs like Queen on the same Oct. 3 bill as Louise Burns and Little Destroyer.

5. Brasstronaut. The genre-blurring band is one of five acts (including LIINKS, Sam the Astronaut, Tonye, and Jon and Roy) kicking off the LIVE series on Oct. 2. On Oct. 4, Brasstronaut’s Edo Van Breeemen will perform the live score of Hollow in the Land, with the Castlegar-shot (and -set) movie’s director, Scooter Corkle, providing visuals.
