Patrick Chan competes at the 2018 Canadian Tire
Patrick Chan, Kaetlyn Osmond, Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir—Canada’s best figure skaters are coming to Vancouver in their quests for Olympic gold.
From Jan. 8-14, 2018, over 200 skaters will compete in the 2018 Canadian Tire National Skating Championship. The top competitors will get a spot on the Skate Canada National Team and the Canadian teams—a position that includes a ticket to compete at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang, South Korea.
Skaters in the men, women, pair, and ice dance disciplines will compete in three levels: senior, junior, and novice. In all, Canada will send two men, three women, three pair teams and three ice dance teams to PyeongChang. Teams will also compete at the 2018 ISU World Figure Skating Championships, 2018 ISU Four Continents Figure Skating Championships, and 2018 ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships.
Here are some of the skating stars you’ll see at this year’s 2018 Canadian Tire National Skating Championship, which takes place at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre (6066 Thunderbird Blvd, University of British Columbia, Vancouver). Patrick Chan. The three-time world champion and nine-time Canadian champion will vie for his 10th Canadian title. If achieved, he will hold the all-time record. He is currently tied with nine titles with Canadian figure skater Montgomery Wilson.
Kaetlyn Osmond. The world silver medalist will defend her 2017 Canadian title in search of her fourth title. She will be chased by world bronze medalist Gabrielle Daleman, the youngest member of the 2014 Olympic Team.

Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford. In 2017, two-time world champions Duhamel and Radford captured their sixth consecutive Canadian title to break the all-time record and become one of the most decorated Canadian pair teams in history. At the 2018 Canadian Tire National Skating Championship, they are looking to capture their seventh consecutive Canadian title. The pair’s signature elements include death spirals and quad throws.

Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir. The three-time Ice Dance World Champions look to capture their eighth national title. The pair won the first ever Olympic gold for Canada in ice dance.
Along with the above (and other) seasoned athletes, merging talent in the junior and novice categories also compete. The city last hosted the event in 2008.
