Stephen King’s Misery comes to the Vancouver stage

One of Stephen King’s best-known thrillers is coming to the Vancouver stage.

From April 5-May 5, the Arts Club presents its production of Misery. First published in 1987, Misery is a thriller featuring a romance novelist who falls into the hands of one of his biggest, and most demented, fans. No one who saw the 1990 movie can forget the scene where Kathy Bates’ Annie Wilkes shows what lengths she is prepared to go to to keep author Paul Sheldon tapping away on his keyboard (or typewriter, as it were).

The stage adaptation of Stephen King’s thriller premiered in 2012. In 2015, Bruce Willis and Laurie Metcalfe starred in a Broadway version.

For the Arts Club version, actors Andrew McNee and Lucia Frangione play the novelist and his keeper.

Two-time Academy Award winner William Goldman wrote the adaptation, as well as the 1990 movie version. Goldman is known for his screenplays, including Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay), The Stepford Wives, All the President’s Men (Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay), and Dolores Claiborne (another King adaptation). As a novelist, his most famous books include Marathon Man, Magic and The Princess Bride (all made into movies).

He is also known for his nonfiction books about Hollywood, including Adventures in the Screen Trade and Which Lie Did I Tell?

According to a media release, the Arts Club’s Artistic Director Bill Millerd programmed this play as part of his final season. “Misery is a show we’ve all been looking forward to for some time,” the media release quotes him as saying. “Staging a thriller by the master of the genre is a rare opportunity and we’re excited to bring something quite different with this show. Director Rachel Ditor has given our longtime Properties Master Michael Gall and his team the chance to really show off their talent for special effects.”
