Celebrate Earth Day with a Green Birthday Bash in Stanley Park

Gather in Stanley Park on Saturday, April 21 to celebrate the ecology of Vancouver’s beloved park and the 30th birthday the Stanley Park Ecology Society (SPES). Everyone is invited to join hands-on ecological activities and enjoy some birthday cake!

Starting at noon, visit the Viewing Plaza at Lost Lagoon to hear welcome speeches presented by the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation, then grab a slice of cake before visiting the exhibitor booths and participating in Earth-themed activities.

The afternoon will have you rolling up your sleeves to help restore habitat in Stanley Park. Visitors will have the opportunity to learn about English Ivy weaving at a drop-in weaving event with environmental artist Sharon Kallis. You’ll also learn about invasive plant pulling and native plant planting that will help to enhance the park.

Afternoon tours will also be available for participants: The Tour of Heron Colony and the Tour of Conservation in the Park. Led by SPES naturalists and biologists, the tours will have you learning about the great blue heron colony, home to over 70 active nests and 140 big birds, and various conservation initiatives, including swallow nest boxes, mason bee condos, and habitat islands.

Stanley Park is a fragment of wilderness in the heart of Canada’s third largest city. With over 8 million visitors per year, this jewel in Vancouver’s crown faces daily threats to its wildlife and habitats. SPES works year-round to manage these threats and conserve this natural space for the benefit of visitors and wildlife alike. At this event, you’ll discover how SPES helps the Park Board manage Stanley Park’s 1000 acre green space to support wildlife.
