Filming in Vancouver: Nicolas Cage, Ben Platt, the Bletchley Circle: San Francisco, and more

What? Who says Nicolas Cage is over-the-top? Pffft.

Get ready, Vancouver, because a Hollywood star with a reputation for excess will be arriving in the city this summer.

While we wait for that to happen, a Pitch Perfect star will start shooting his first lead film role. And later on this week, a team of brainy female sleuths will finish up shooting the first season of their new TV series.

Let’s take a look at these shows (and more) in a roundup of what’s going on in Vancouver’s scene scene this week.

Nicolas Cage

Watch out, Vancouverites—Nicolas Cage (Kick-Ass) is coming to town because he’s got A Score to Settle.

Directed by Shawn Ku (Beautiful Boy), the story follows a convicted mob enforcer named Frank (Cage), who is facing a terminal illness and has spent 22 years in prison for a crime he didn’t commit.

After being released from prison, Frank develops a plan to exact revenge upon the mob bosses who wronged him.

What stands in his way, though, is his new relationship with his son.

The rest of the cast hasn’t been announced yet so we’ll have to wait and see who else this project, which shoots from June 24 to July 14, brings to town.

Ben Platt

Meanwhile, the feature film Love and Oatmeal starts filming today (June 4) and will wrap at the end of the month on June 29.

Directed by Peter Sattler (Camp X-Ray), the drama will star Ben Platt (Pitch Perfect) in his first film lead as an aspiring twentysomething writer named Scott. Unfortunately, he has to contend with the prospect of having to give up his dreams of moving to Paris—when his father suddenly dies, he’s forced to take in and take care of his mentally ill sister.

The cast also includes Lola Kirke, Debs Howard, and Andy Thompson.

The Bletchley Circle: San Francisco

A TV series that’s finishing up this week is The Bletchley Circle: San Francisco.

This mystery-drama series wraps up production on Season 1 on Thursday (June 7), having begun back on March 20.

It’s the first original drama series by BritBox, BBC Worldwide’s streaming service and ITV that offers British TV to the North American market.

The Bletchley Circle

It’s a spinoff of ITV’s The Bletchley Circle.

That miniseries followed four British women in 1952 who, after working with mathematicians and code breakers during the Second World War, begin to investigate the murders of several women themselves when the police won’t pay them heed.

The Bletchley Circle: San Francisco

In this new series, two of the lead characters from the miniseries‚ Millie (Rachael Stirling) and Jean (Julie Graham), team up with two American codebreakers to apply their intellects and skills to crack cases unsolved by law enforcement.

The cast, which features numerous local actors, includes Crystal Balint, Ben Cotton, Jennifer Spence, Jessica Harmon, Paul McGillion, Chanelle Peloso, and more.

Ben Cotton

A film starting on Tuesday (June 5) is Benchwarmers 2, directed by Jonathan Rosenbaum, and will continue until June 28. Unfortunately, details aren’t available for this film.

Presumably, it’s a sequel to the 2006 baseball comedy starring Rob Schneider, David Spade, Jon Heder, and more, but we’ll have to wait to see who’ll be in this new film.

Well, that’s all for this week but we’ve got plenty more to chat about in the weeks to come so stay tuned.
