Broadway classic and beloved fairytale this summer at Theatre Under the Stars

Mallory Jame and Tré Cotten in TUTS’ Cinderella.

Want to enjoy some outdoor theatre this summer in Vancouver? This year’s Theatre Under the Stars shows are Cinderella and 42nd Street. The two shows alternate nights at Malkin Bowl in Stanley Park beginning July 4 and running until Aug. 18. Find out more below.

In 42nd Street, Peggy Sawyer is fresh off the bus from small-town America. She’s just another face in the chorus line in Broadway’s newest, glitziest show until the leading lady gets injured, and the ingenue has the chance to tap-dance into the star’s shoes.

Adapted from the cult classic 1933 film (which featured choreography from the legendary Busby Berkeley), 42nd Street includes the classic tunes “Lullaby of Broadway,” “Shuffle Off to Buffalo,” “We’re in the Money,” and the titular show-stopping, tap-dance spectacular.

Paige Fraser makes her TUTS stage debut as Peggy. She stars alongside Jessie Award-winner Janet Gigliotti as stage diva Dorothy Brock. Actor Blake Sartin (Billy Lawlor) returns to TUTS following his acclaimed portrayal as George in 2017’s Theatre Under the Stars production The Drowsy Chaperone. The show also marks director Robert McQueen’s return to TUTS after a 25-year break. His credentials include associate director for Broadway’s Mamma Mia!

For their 1957 version of the fairytale, originally produced for television and starring Julie Andrews, Rodgers & Hammerstein infused Cinderella with the kind of musical enchantment they brought to The Sound of Music, South Pacific, and Oklahoma! The TONY Award-winning musical features Mallory James, also making her TUTS debut, as the titular heroine. Tré Cotten is Prince Topher and Laura Cowan is Marie, The Fairy Godmother.

This performance is directed by Sarah Rodgers, who previously directed West Side Story, Hairspray, and Shrek for the company.

Theatre Under the Stars is one of Vancouver’s most popular summer events. Last year, more than 40,000 people caught the 2017 shows, Mary Poppins and The Drowsy Chaperone.
