40th Vancouver International Wine Festival serves up 82,000 wine glasses; 43,000 bottles of wine

Vancouver’s annual wine lovers’ delight, but dishwashers’ nightmare, is well underway. The 40th Vancouver International Wine Festival, which, according to keynote speaker Paul Wagner of California, is “the largest wine festival in the Western Hemisphere”, is in full swing around town. It’s a great week for wine and food lovers, but not so much for those who have to deal with 82,000 wine glasses by the time the festival wraps up on Sunday. To say nothing of countless plates, cups and cutlery.

Things to Do in Vancouver this Weekend: August 31, 2017

It’s the last big hurrah of the summer, and rumour has it it’s going to be a hot one, and I don’t mean the two (yes, two) adult Disney-themed events going on. Enjoy not wearing socks or sleeves outside while you still can at one of the many music festivals this weekend! If you’re the type who prefers the sweet icy breath of indoor air con, don’t worry, there’s some great things in here for you as well.

You can’t keep a good game show down — the return of Graham Clark’s Quiz Show

Graham Clark brings back The Quiz Show from “game-show hiatus.”

Graham Clark loves game shows. And so the Vancouver comedian is eager to once again present The Quiz Show, a live hybrid of American game show and British panel show.

Clark debuted in 2016 at the now sadly defunct Main Street gallery Hot Art Wet City. Originally a spoof on segments from game shows past, The Quiz Show grew to incorporate all original segments. Local comedians are the contestants, and do their best to make audience members laugh – and win prizes, of course. On Sept. 9, he’ll resurrect the show at the Fox Cabaret (2321 Main St.).

Things to Do in Vancouver this Weekend: August 17, 2017

Ready yourself for the beginning of The Fair at the PNE, an interstellar tall ship performance, dancing horses, a doughnut marathon, craft festivals, and a celebration of garlic! After the weekend, be sure to cap it off by being outside for the partial solar eclipse on Monday; by 10:21am the sun will be mostly blocked out by the moon. You can watch through special glasses, a home-made pinhole camera, or just watch the effect on the shadows around you, the wildlife, and the surrounding sky as the sun’s light turns to a sliver.

Talent from near and far puts the squeeze on Vancouver at this year’s Accordion Noir Festival

Russian band Iva Nova

Russian ethno-rock quartet Iva Nova plays this year’s Accordion Noir Festival in Vancouver.

In the not-your-baba’s-accordion-festival department, the Accordion Noir Festival is back with more fun-filled squeezebox adventures.

This year’s lineup includes talent from as far away as Finland Russia, as well as an accordion fixer from Montreal. The event takes place Sept. 7-10 at various venues around town, with the four evenings arranged by theme. These include Accordion Drink-o-Bingo (Sept. 7), Accordion Alchemy parts I & II (Sept. 8), Accordion Community Day (Sept. 9, the same night as an album release party from local accordion sensation Geoff Berner), and Underdog Instrument Grudge Match: The Millennial Edition (Sept. 10).

Here’s some more of what to expect.
