Vancouver Aquarium Voted Top 10 in the World

You always knew there was something special about all those jellyfish, otters, wolf eels and Arctic char.  Now the world knows, too.

Vancouver Aquarium has been voted one of the ten best in the world by readers of USA Today.  The aquarium nabbed the seventh spot overall in the newspaper’s 10Best survey, just behind Monterey Bay Aquarium in California and ahead of Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut.

The survey notes that the aquarium has just completed the biggest expansion in its history, nearly doubling its gallery space.  It now houses some 50,000 animals, with special new exhibits highlighting Red Sea coral reefs and Africa’s Lake Malawi.

Currently, the aquarium receives more than 1 million visitors every year.   Continue reading:

City of Vancouver Book Award nominations announced

The 2013 City of Vancouver Book Award nominations have been announced. The 25th annual City of Vancouver Book Award will be presented at the Mayor’s Arts Awards Gala at Science World (1455 Quebec St.) on Nov. 22. Poetry, memoir and non-fiction books –  all very Vancouver-centric – are up for the award, which is picked by a jury that includes a retired librarian.

Who Loves YVR? (Officially, the best airport in North America)

Earlier this spring, while we were all distracted with Royal Wedding fever and playoff hockey, a very special honour was quietly bestowed on our own hometown airport.   At the prestigious (and little known) World Airport Awards in Copenhagen, Vancouver International Airport (YVR, to us regulars) took home the prize for North America’s best airport.

Award organizers collected 11 million questionnaires from travelers around the world.  More than 240 airports were ranked on 39 different criteria, including accessibility, public transportation options, cleanliness, comfort, friendliness of staff, clarity of signage and other amenities.

And when the smoke cleared, YVR was North America’s best.

Now, if you’ve done any amount of flying, you probably know that the award is well deserved.  YVR might not be the biggest or glitziest airport out there.  But it does stand out for a lot of reasons.

2010 Edgewater Casino Chinese Restaurant Awards announced

The winner: House Special Crab at Richmond's Negative Space Restaurant

In February, Conde Nast Traveler magazine made official what locals have long known: Metro Vancouver has the best Chinese food in the world.

Today the 2010 Edgewater Casino Chinese Restaurant Awards named the best of the best.

A panel of local foodies that included CBC Radio‘s Margaret Gallagher, the Vancouver Sun‘s Nathan Fong and Ming Pao‘s Iris Yim picked the 2010 Critics’ Choice Signature Dish Awards.
