National Geographic ranks Vancouver in World’s Top 10 Beach Cities

We knew it all along, but now it’s official:  Vancouver has some of the best city beaches in the world, according to a recent top 10 list compiled by National Geographic.

Here’s what the experts at NatGeo have to say: “Canada’s most adventurous metropolis is home to ten beaches, from the family-centric Jericho to the clothing-optional Wreck Beach, many of which offer commanding views of the Vancouver skyline and majestic North Shore Mountains. Sporty types prefer Kitsilano or “Kits,” a six-minute drive from downtown, for its free tennis and basketball courts, and its super-size heated saltwater pool.”

As promised last week, here’s the photo of the good sports who made Wreck Beach part of the Guinness World Record for Simultaneous Skinnydipping in North America.

Congrats you guys!

Beach Profile: Spanish Banks

Well, the weather outside might not look it, but summer is officially here. In my books, that means beach time! Beach #2 to be featured in my Beach Profiles is one of my personal favourites, Spanish Banks!

What: Spanish Banks. Technically divided into Spanish Banks East, West, and “Extension”, my favourite spot is West.

Where: Close to the University of British Columbia, off Northwest Marine Drive, from Sasamat Street and west!

Who: Due to its proximity to UBC, Spanish Banks is almost as popular as Wreck Beach with students. With plenty of space on the sand and grass, as well as off-leash and BBQ areas, its also a popular spot with families. However, the biggest draw for many here is the expanse of sand at low-tide, which draws skimboarders from all over the city.

Why: Spanish Banks has a laid-back vibe for those who just want to chill out, but enough to do to keep excitable children engaged. Dog-owners will dig the pet-friendly spaces, and everyone will enjoy the entertainment-factor of skimboarders (a sport where success is determined by not wiping out – at least not too hard), whether they’re brave enough to try or not. The view of the downtown skyline (backed by mountains, natch) also gets top marks.

Keep the beach comments coming!

Beach Profile: Kits

Beat the Monday blues with dreams of weekends past and future. In Vancouver, there’s no better place to spend those summer days than on one of the city’s beaches, which is why every week for the next four I’ll be writing a profile on my favourite sandy strips. This week, Kits Beach!

What: Kitsilano Beach, a.ka. Kits. Also the site of Kitsilano Pool, a 137-meter heated salt-water pool.

Where: North of the trendy boutiques and coffee shops of West 4th, between Cypress and Yew Streets. Coming from Downtown, take the Burrard Street Bridge South and then hook a right on Cornwall. When you see the beautiful and bronzed, you’ll know you’re in the right spot.
