Vancouver International Burlesque Festival May 2 – 4

The Vancouver International Burlesque Festival is upon us, bigger and better than ever. For three nights, from May 2 – 4 (with a closing party May 5), the city is hosting some of the best local, regional and international talent in the burlesque scene. To find out a little more, we asked dancer/singer extraordinaire Nicky Ninedoors, who is on the Board of Directors (yes, even a burlesque festival needs one) and a performer with the fest, about some of the highlights.

Video Game Burlesque March 29 – 30

Last year, the VanDolls hosted their first Video Game Burlesque show. The turnout surprised even the performers when the first show sold-out and the Dolls had to add another.

On March 29 and 30, the VanDolls are bringing back this popular melding of girls and games. This time, instead of a retro theme that saw the VanDolls doing routines based on Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda and even Ms. Pac-Man, the ladies are dipping into newer games. We chatted with troupe member Ruffelsilkskin, who told us a little about what to expect.

What happens when you put slam poetry together with burlesque and music? Why, you get Tongue N’ Cheek, a bawdy night of song, words and tassels at the Rio Theatre (1660 E. Broadway near Commercial) Friday March 22.

Now in its second year, Tongue N’ Cheek features some of the city’s top burlesque performers interpreting the erotic poetry of renowned spoken-word artists from Vancouver and the U.S.

Valentine’s Day Vancouver – 5 offbeat events

Once again you’ve waited ’til the last minute and, unless you want to eat at 4 p.m., all your favourite restaurants are booked up. Meanwhile the hotel packages look great but you want something a little bit different (not to mention easier on the pocketbook) to impress your significant other. What do you do?

Fortunately, there’s no shortage of weird and potentially wonderful events waiting to entertain you and your loved one in Vancouver. And if you’re single, these might be the best places for an unexpected look from a stranger’s eyes. Just remember to invite us to the wedding. (All events Feb. 14 2013).

Vancouver troupe Sweet Soul Burlesque celebrates its 10th anniversary

Thanks to some dedicated individuals and groups, Vancouver’s burlesque scene is probably as health as it’s ever been. We have the Vancouver International Burlesque Festival (more on which in an upcoming post) returning, Kitty Nights at the Biltmore every Sunday and Sweet Sip at the Keefer Bar every Thursday.

Now, Sweet Soul Burlesque, the troupe that dances at Sweet Sip, is about to celebrate its 10th anniversary with a burlesque extravaganza Feb 2 at the Rio Theatre.
