Steveston Salmon Festival: Steveston Barbecues 1,200 Pounds of Wild Salmon for Canada Day

How many people can you serve with 1,200 pounds of wild salmon? On Canada Day July 1, chefs at Steveston’s annual Salmon Festival Barbecue will prepare 2,300 plates of fresh sockeye expertly cooked over open alder wood fire pits.

Steveston knows fish. Referred to as Salmonopolis and home to the “Monster” Gulf of Georgia Cannery, a national historic site, this scenic West Coast fishing community is just a 20-minute drive south of Vancouver. It’s a perfect day trip for canny Canada Day celebrants looking to get out of town, without traveling too far.

Although the Steveston Salmon Barbecue steals the spotlight, it’s just one part of the family-friendly Steveston Salmon Festival, “Canada’s biggest little birthday party.” Continue reading:

Canada Day at Granville Island 2012

Canada Day—July 1—is fast approaching. Of the Top 10 Canada Day Events in Vancouver, the all-day celebrations on Granville Island are among the most popular: the entire island comes alive for Canada Day!

Almost all of the festivities at Canada Day on Granville Island are free—from their 13th annual Canada Day Parade that ends at the site of their Official Canada Day Ceremony (“O Canada” plus cake!), to the free jazz concerts, False Creek Ferries Ballet, MELA! South Asian festival, art exhibits, Disco Party in Railspur Alley, and multiple kids’ activities. But there is one that isn’t (which is absolutely worth the $8-per-person price tag): the Truly Canadian Pancake Breakfast (7am – 10am), a Granville Island tradition that includes hot cakes, maple syrup and Canadian bacon, with proceeds benefiting the Canuck Place Children’s Hospice.
