More than any other holiday, Thanksgiving is the one most closely associated with a home-cooked meal. But there are lots of wonderful reasons to enjoy a traditional Canadian Thanksgiving out, too—you can dine with a group of friends, treat the family (without anyone needing to slave over a hot stove all day), or, if you’re in Vancouver over the holiday and away from your family and friends, you can meet new people at a Thanksgiving communal dining event.

Thanksgiving is this Monday, October 10, and many Vancouver restaurants are offering deals on traditional Canadian Thanksgiving dinners. So why not do something different this year and treat yourself to a Thanksgiving dinner out?

Great Deals: Appy Hour at The Boathouse on Kits Beach

Taking advantage of the sun on this gorgeous Friday afternoon, I spent the day with my family doing one of the things we love best: exploring Vancouver’s southwestern beaches. We started at Spanish Banks, made our way to Jericho, and finished off at Kits Beach. By the time we hit Kits, we needed a snack, so we checked out the beach’s newest resident: The Boathouse at Kits Beach.

Vancouver’s Boathouse restaurants have been a seafood destination since 1981, but they just opened The Boathouse at Kits Beach this summer. With its floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking some of city’s best views—and the beach itself—this is the perfect spot for a gourmet beach snack. And if you’re looking for a great deal—especially on beer and oysters—do what we did and take advantage of “Appy Hour” from 3pm – 6pm.

The air in Vancouver is practically vibrating with the excitement of watching the Canucks battle the Bruins in the Stanley Cup play-offs, and now Vancouver’s Fairmont hotels are joining in the fun, with special cocktails, dishes, parties, and packages to celebrate the men in blue and green.

The Fairmont Waterfront
Watch the games at the famous Herons West Coast Kitchen + Bar (they added TVs just for the play-offs), and get a game-night Burger and Beer special for just $15. Try a Canuck-tini and the delectable Sedin Duo Chocolate Dessert (chocolate mousse cake with a chocolate-covered macaroon, raspberry sauce and a chocolate hockey stick) and the restaurant will donate $1 from each purchase to the Stanley Park Ecology Society.

Hotel Deals during Vancouver’s Dine Out 2011

Now in its ninth year, Vancouver’s Dine Out – the annual event that lets diners “taste drive” discounted menus at the city’s top restaurants – gets a lot of attention. Many locals wait all year for it and visitors stream into the city to take advantage of the bargain eats.  What many people don’t realize, however, is that there are some significant hotel promotions that go along with the Dine Out specials.

The Dine Out website lists dozens of hotels offering deeply discounted stays during the Jan. 24 – Feb. 6 event.  Similar to the Dine Out meal promotion,  nightly rates come in three distinct price points: $68, $98 and $138.   For downtown accommodation, that’s a serious bargain.  In fact, it’s tempting to come for the Dine Out dinner specials and stay the night.
