“It’s Full of Stars!”

by Stephen Pearce

Silent explosions of light, flashes, flickers, threads of colour that burst into existence and died just as quickly…the quote from 2001: A Space Odyssey came to my mind as the ocean biomass luminesced  in response to the motion of my partner. There was no up or down, dimensions were meaningless – we were completely engulfed in the blackness, interrupted only by the sound of our breathing and the sparkles of light.

It was 10:30 at night and we had started our night dive at Whytecliff Park by descending to 15 meters (45 feet) with our dive lights turned off. “Gorgeous” my friend Darek remarked an hour later. This was his first night dive ever and we had chosen a location only twenty minutes from downtown Vancouver.

Ansell Point

Nudibranch

This is the third installment of our series on diving near Vancouver. This time Stephen visits Ansell Point.

Ansell Point is a gem of a dive site, located about two kilometers north of Whtytecliffe Park en route to Whistler on the Sea to Sky Highway. Look for the Ansell Road turn-off and after exiting and crossing the overpass take the first street on your left which is called Citrus Wynd. Follow it down and to the right to a cull-de-sac where you can park and suit up.

The most challenging part of the dive is getting down to the water. The staircase is sturdy and well built but its 65 steps in total. You may not know that climbing down but I guarantee that your legs will feel it when climbing back up after a successful dive. If you’re planning two dives leave your gear at the bottom of the stairs and just replace your tanks.

A Pearly Nudibranch caught in the dive light

This is the second installment of our series on diving near Vancouver. This time Stephen visits Kelvin Grove.

Kelvin Grove is one of those wonderful dive sites that are only a short drive from Vancouver. It’s situated just south of the village of Lion’s Bay on the coast of Howe Sound, about 20-30 minutes from downtown Vancouver. Access to the site is via boat from the nearby marina, or you can park at one of the nearby visitor parking spots – just remember to pick up a day pass from the marina. And remember that the parking and trail down to the beach are on private property, so please be respectful.
