Where to get a free education in Vancouver

581125_10151263830296759_1732833805_nWhile Simon Fraser University and the University of British Columbia are two of the city’s best-known schools, there’s a little-known place of learning that’s been attracting scholars, academics and people who are interested in challenging their minds. Every Monday since February, the Or Gallery has been host to The Free School, a free lecture and discussion series organized by two PhD students.

As most comedy nerds already know, podcasts are the most ideal medium for comics to do their thing, aside from on stage. There’s a freedom in podcasts that can’t be found in traditional radio – there’s no cap on time and bad words aren’t censored. Their popularity in the comedy world lends itself to live podcasting, which is essentially a comedy show that’s taped in front of a live audience and broadcast later on iTunes.

With the launch of Vancouver’s Comedyfest this week there will be plenty of live podcasts to check out. We’ve complied your list of options.

Public Karaoke

You know that expression, “go sing it from the rooftops”? Well, here’s your chance to do just that – except replace “rooftops” with “the centre of Vancouver’s downtown core”.

This upcoming Sunday, the public (read: you) is invited to take part in a very communal sing-along. The Vancouver Public Space Network, along with Urban Republic Arts Society have arranged a karaoke kiosk for those brave and bold individuals who have no qualms about belting out their favourite tunes in front of a street full of strangers.

How it works: A Karaoke Kiosk is set up at this Sunday, August 19th from 2 pm – 6 pm (meaning there’s a good shot you’ll get your song in) at Robson Square between Hornby and Howe. The outdoor booth lets you choose from hundreds of songs in seven different languages from a touch screen display. It’s completely free – meaning you don’t have to tip the host – and everyone is welcome.  Even if you sing off-key.

New Organic Farm Sprouts Next to BC Place

British Columbia is famous as the birthplace of the 100-mile diet.  But residents of downtown Vancouver might be enjoying a one-mile diet later this summer thanks to an urban farm sprouting up right next to BC Place.

Earlier this month, I started noticing empty wooden boxes – first hundreds, then thousands of them – neatly spread out on the parking lot next to the stadium.  Then one day a mountain of top soil appeared at the site.

It turns out that the dusty old lot – which has been sitting empty since Expo 86 – is about to become Vancouver’s largest urban farm.

Forty varieties of organic fruits and vegetables are currently being planted on the two-acre site, everything from strawberries and melons to salad greens and daikon radishes, according to a recent Vancouver Sun article.  The farm is is completely portable – with everything grown in above-ground containers – since the land is on a three-year lease from its owner.

Interested in sampling some of that tasty, hyper-local produce come harvest time?

Video of Black Bear in Downtown Vancouver

A black bear hitched a ride into downtown Vancouver on a garbage truck yesterday.  The video below shows the scene at Georgia and Cambie Streets – smack dab in the middle of a busy city of 2.1 million people.   Conservation officers appear to prick the bear with a tranquilizer dart – then a very brave Vancouver police officer takes care of the rest.

Just some follow-up, in case you’re wondering: According to a Vancouver Sun article, the 1.5-year-old bear was probably nosing around inside a dumpster on the North Shore (parts of which are heavily wooded), when the dumpster was picked up and dumped into one of those automated garbage trucks.  Then . . .
