Last month, to little fanfare, one of our city’s own talents was presented with prestigious recognition. Vancouver-based independent director Michelle Ouellet was named by Playback, Canada’s film and television industry magazine,  one of 10 up-and-coming talents to watch.

New CTV Police Drama Set in Vancouver To Air January 2013

Yesterday’s CTV Upfronts—where the network outlines its 2012-13 TV schedule—revealed that a new police drama set (and filmed) in Vancouver has been ordered for January 2013.

The Vancouver police drama, currently titled Motive, will follow a female Vancouver police detective who “matches wits with killers.”  From the report on CBC: “Each episode reveals not only the victim, but the killer as well. As the detective begins her work, the audience also is drawn inside the mind of the culprit.”

Vancouver in the Movies: Top 5 film locations

Fringe Films Evacuation Scene at Vancouver Film School

Earlier this month, when I was walking down Granville Street late one night, I stumbled upon a crime scene.  Riot vans had congregated at the corner of Granville and Pender.  There was a huge crowd, and several policemen were yelling into their radios.

Only upon closer inspection did I notice that the riot van said San Francisco Police Department on the side.  Turns out I had stumbled onto a movie set for an upcoming TV series.

That got me thinking about how often Vancouver ends up in movies and on TV (often disguised as another city).  I did some research and found a few of the top filming locations in the city (many thanks to a great article by John Mackie in the Vancouver Sun).
