New Street Cart: Indian Food from Vikram Vij

One name in Vancouver is synonymous with mouthwatering Indian cuisine: Vikram Vij.

Vij’s, the eatery he opened off Granville Street in 1994, has consistently been named the city’s best Indian restaurant by Vancouver Magazine, justly famous for such delicacies as lamb popsicles in cream curry and spot prawns in coconut masala.

Now – to the delight of street food enthusiasts – Vij has branched out into the food truck business.

Vij’s Railway Express opened earlier this month in the heart of downtown, on West Georgia Street, between Thurlow and Burrard Streets.  While some of the menu items are similar to what’s in the restaurant, the theme is a bit different.  The focus is on the diverse cuisine you’d find at railway stations across India – dishes from Delhi to Bombay and Calcutta that go way beyond the typical tikka masalas.

Each menu item is intended to represent a different “station” on a rail journey across the country.  Offerings change all the time: day to day and week to week.   So just what kind of dishes are we talking about?  Even by Vancouver’s lofty street food standards, they’re something special (Warning: Stop reading now if you’re hungry.).

A Terimayo Before Your Flight? Japadog lands at YVR

Photo credit: are you gonna eat that | Flickr

There’s been lots of food cart news lately in Vancouver: 12 new vendors; carts in public parks; a food truck block party at the Waldorf.  Amid all the excitement, however, this tasty bit of news slid through the cracks.

Japadog now has a food cart right outside of the International Arrivals Terminal at Vancouver’s YVR airport.   Airport dining may never be the same.

I noticed the brightly colored cart – with its endorsements from the likes of Ice Cube and Steven Seagal – while leaving the airport earlier this week.  The savoury smell of all-beef dogs topped with miso, wasabi, seaweed and daikon made me wish I’d skipped the in-flight meal.

I was disappointed to discover, however, that no one seemed to be patronizing the new YVR Japadog.  Travelers hustled by lugging carry-ons and suitcases, but nobody bothered to pause for some Asian-infused, wiener-based refreshment.  Considering that the downtown Japadogs are usually queued up day and night, this came as a surprise.  Continue reading:

Food Cart Hall of Fame: Chicken Sandwich at La Brasserie

Brass Chicken Sandwich- La Brasserie Cart Vancouver

After making big waves the past two summers, food carts have kind of receded from the headlines in Vancouver.  They’re not such a novelty anymore.  Plus, it’s the middle of winter.  Who wants to stand outside and eat in the drizzle?

But that doesn’t mean ambitious street vendors aren’t out there right now: bundled up in sweaters and jackets and serving up their delicacies.  There are some great street eats to be had this February, including some excellent food carts that deserve a second look.

Like La Brasserie Street.   If you’re a fan of street food and haven’t checked out this little cart that’s parked most days on the corner of Granville and West Georgia Streets, then you should make it your top gastronomic priority.  La Brasserie excels in all the street food criteria: 1) It’s cheap; 2) The food is finger-lickin’ delicious; and 3) In true Vancouver style, the ingredients, preparation and presentation are top notch.

Food Carts Unite! Street Food City is Coming, Jan 24-26

Re-Up BBQ Food Cart at the Vancouver Art Gallery

It was only in 2010 that Vancouver loosened municipal by-laws to allow street food (besides hotdogs and popcorn) to be sold in the city.  Since then, we’ve gotten off to a great start, with dozens of food trucks on strategic corners selling everything from Korean shortrib tacos to Southern-style pulled pork.

But, as any street food lover knows, we’ve got a long way to go.  In more advanced street food cities (Portland, Oregon, or Austin, Texas, for example), food carts congregate in strategic clusters called pods.  So you get a bunch of different carts selling their goodies all in one spot.  The atmosphere is lively, food is cheap and you’ve got plenty of choices.

Vancouver really hasn’t had anything like that.  Until now.  This Jan. 24-26, as part of Dine Out 2012, Vancouver is introducing Street Food City.  Eight of the city’s top food trucks will come together in the same place for a three-day street food extravaganza.  Here are the details:
