Lacing Up at Robson Square

Spending my early childhood years in Calgary, Alberta, I was never far from the ice. Growing up at the local outdoor skating rink I spent my formative years enjoying endless hours of figure skating and good old-fashioned shinny hockey. Unsure where the time has gone, I am embarrassed to admit, it has been a few years since I last put blades on my feet. In a valiant attempt to revisit my youth, I promised myself I would lace up and brave the outdoor rink at Robson Square.

Date Idea: Ice Skating on Vancouver’s Many Indoor and Outdoor Rinks

My best first date involved skating at The Robson Square Ice Rink. I arrived at the rink with my skates and a picture on my phone of the guy I was supposed to be meeting. Ah yes, the joys of on-line dating! When he finally did arrive, I was blown away by the immediate chemistry. We were holding hands, skating side-by-side on the ice, within five minutes.

Ice skating is a lovely date since it’s inexpensive, more active and inventive than your usual chatting over coffee, and invites G-rated physical contact. If you’re feeling wobbly (or just pretending to be so), you can reach for your partner’s gloved hand and, suddenly, you’re a unit gliding along frozen water. And if you’re like me and manage to spectacularly fall at one point during the date, you can laugh at yourself with good grace.

With Valentine’s Day around the corner (hint hint), you might consider lacing up. Fortunately, Vancouver has tons of rinks, each offering a unique way of enjoying this classic winter sport together.

Time to lace up those skates. The Robson Square Ice Rink reopens for its 2015-2016 season on Dec. 1. Located in the heart of downtown Vancouver, the rink offers covered ice skating, complete with holiday music and a concession stand with hot chocolate and other warm drinks.

The best part: It’s free if you bring your own skates. Skate rentals will set you back just $4. How’s that for a holiday entertainment deal.

Just how much of a bargain is that? Consider that rates at New York’s famous Rockefeller Plaza ice rink start at $25 a person, plus another $12 for skate rentals.  Continue reading:
