You’re invited to experience Vancouver in a whole new light with the debut of Canada’s largest Chinese Lantern Festival coming to the city this December.

This five week celebration of Chinese culture will feature massive lanterns, unforgettable performances, and incredible food. The outdoor festival is lighting up for the first time on December 15, 2017 and will until January 21, 2018.

The Winter Solstice Lantern Festival Celebrates the Shortest Day of the Year

The winter solstice officially marks the longest night of the year in Canada, and is known as the official start of the winter season. But, since it already seems like we’ve been in the winter season for quite awhile in Vancouver – let’s just say it’s the start of the official countdown back to summer!

This year, winter solstice is being held on Wednesday, December 21 and to mark the longest and darkest night of the year, Vancouver will be hosting a party. You are invited to light up the night on Wednesday with the Winter Solstice Lantern Festival, taking place in three neighbourhoods across the city for the 23rd year.

During the winter months in Vancouver, the dark and rainy nights can become overwhelming to some. We’re still lucky to get quite a number of daylight hours during the winter season (especially on sunny days like today).

The shortest day of the year is coming up on Monday, December 21, celebrated as winter solstice, or the start of the winter season (um, what?!).

To help illuminate the night and bring some extra light into our lives, the 22nd Annual Winter Solstice Lantern Festival will be held on Monday evening. Brightening up the longest night with lanterns, fire, singing, drumming, music, and dancing during this free community event!

The dance of the sun and earth has inspired celebrations of the human spirit, expressed through art and music, throughout the ages. Honouring many cultural traditions, the annual Winter Solstice Lantern Festival illuminates the longest night of the year with lanterns, fire, singing, drumming, music and dancing!

Celebrate the longest night of the year this Saturday, December 21st at the 20th Annual Winter Solstice Lantern Festival, the “secret” December event takes place across multiple neighbourhoods throughout the city. This mostly free community event works to transform four Vancouver neighborhoods to celebrate the returning of the sun.
