Mariachis gather in Vancouver for May festival

There’s something magical about being serenaded by a mariachi band. Perhaps it’s the new-world charm that draws you in. Or maybe it’s their dapper looks: matching oft blinged-out charro outfits complete with sparkly belts and bright cumber bunds.

For me the enchantment of mariachi exists in the music itself. The deep baritone of the lead mariachi singer, the shrill accompanying yips and hollers plus the combination of horns and strings endeared themselves to me since my first mariachi encounter in the warm lands south of the Rio Grande. Mariachi classics such as Volver Volver and Cielito Lindo have been some of my best meal time soundtracks.

Mariachi music can be somber but it can also be jubilant and theatrical depending on the group and event. I like to think of mariachi bands as small, wandering orchestras ready to make you cry one moment and dance the next. A mariachi crew usually consists of three violin players, two trumpet players, one Mexican guitar player, a Vihuela, and a Guitarron plus the occasional harp. The art form started in the State of Jalisco of Mexico to serenade and impress members of the opposite sex (usually women).

Thanks to the efforts of local mariachi enthusiast and Mariachi Los Dorados band member Alex Alegria, Vancouver aficionados and newbies alike will   experience the magic of mariachi first hand this month. No, you don’t have to book a charter flight to ol’Mexico to get your fix of grandiose anthems like Guadalajara, instead stick around for the fifth annual Mariachi Festival Canada kicking off on May 15. Fans of live music and arts in Vancouver were crushed earlier this year when hipster haven the Waldorf shut its doors.  In its short life, the unconventional space on East Hastings Street had become a hub for the city’s resurgent arts community.

Now, comes a ray of new hope – from the unlikeliest of places.

The operators of the Waldorf have decided to open a brand new live music and arts venue – inside the city’s last remaining adult movie theatre.

Plans were announced last week to transform the notoriously dingy Fox Cinema near Main Street and Broadway into a 250-seat music theatre.  Fox Cinema currently sticks out like a sore thumb in the rapidly gentrifying Main Street neighbourhood.   Continue reading:

Free live music at New Orleans-style FanClub on Granville Street

There aren’t many places in Vancouver where you can here a really good live version of Marvin Gaye’s I Heard it through the Grapevine on a random afternoon – and even fewer where you can hear it for free.

Without much fanfare, what may be Vancouver’s best new venue for live music opened on Granville Street recently.  FanClub – operated by the owners of the city’s beloved (and currently closed) Yale blues bar – occupies a New Orleans-style music hall space on the corner of Granville and Nelson Streets.  French doors lead into a bar room with soaring, 30-foot ceilings, a second-floor wrought-iron balcony and – front and center – a huge stage for showcasing local and out-of-town talent.

Most nights of the week, FanClub features ticketed performances by blues, roots, rock and jazz musicians, as well as DJs spinning house music until the late hours.  But – for live music lovers on a budget – FanClub also offers free shows: often in the early evenings on weekdays and all day on Saturday.

I stopped by over the weekend for the Saturday jam session, a sort of open mic that attracts dozens of bands from throughout the Lower Mainland for their 15 minutes of fame.  By 3 p.m., the room was packed and buzzing with more energy than lots of late-night venues on Granville Street. The Lou Reed Song Book at the Waldorf November 25

Lou Reed has made his mark on rock n’ roll history for composing intriguing yet biting music while being effortlessly cool. A piece of his repertoire will be celebrated on Sunday, November 25th at the Waldorf, where several Vancouver musicians will come together to play their favourite Lou Reed songs as part of the Song Book series. We asked a few of the performers to tell us what the former Velvet Underground member means to them.
