Swim! Outdoor Pools Open Today in Vancouver

It’s that time of year again - time to officially trade those toques and jackets for beach towels and flip-flops.

Several of Vancouver’s outdoor pools open today, just in time to take advantage of the May Long Weekend. The Kitsilano, Second Beach, New Brighton and Hillcrest outdoor pools all open for business May 19.

Planning a staycation for this Victoria Day Long Weekend? Don’t worry – You can still get out of the city, soak up B.C.’s natural splendours and be home in time for dinner.

Here are five long weekend daytrip ideas. All of these options are within a 90-minute drive of downtown Vancouver and emphasize the great outdoors. Got more ideas? Please comment below.

Whytecliff Park: This 15-hectare waterfront park in Horseshoe Bay is only 30-45 minutes from the concrete jungles of downtown Vancouver. It features a small, sandy beach, cliffs plunging dramatically to the brisk waters of Howe Sound and even a little island you can swim to that sits just offshore. For families, there’s a large grassy picnic area with changing rooms.

Jazz on the Mountain at Whistler September 2 – 4, 2011

Looking for a quick, easy weekend getaway this Labour Day weekend? Head up to Whistler for Canada’s newest jazz festival, Jazz on the Mountain at Whistler: three days of free and ticketed concerts from top international and Canadian jazz musicians.

The inaugural Jazz on the Mountain festival features daily outdoor concerts at the Whistler Olympic Plaza that include jazz greats Kevin Eubanks, Stanley Jordan, Oliver Jones, The New Gary Burton Quartet, and Spyro Gyra and The Rippingtons, as well as nightly “Jazz Jams” (from 10pm to 1am) at The Mallard Lounge at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler.

Camping near Vancouver

The May long weekend is just around the corner, and with it the unofficial launch of the summer camping season. With so many stunning places to camp near Vancouver it’s hard to come up with a short list, but here are a few of the more well-known spots.

Golden Ears Provincial Park
Manning Park (Lightening Lake)
Alice Lake
Cultus Lake (although can be busy/noisy on weekends)
Porpoise Bay
Lakelse Lake Provincial Park
Sasquatch Provincial Park

These are all provincial park campgrounds, so pretty obvious choices. There are hundreds of less-known spots, many only accessible by logging roads or even by boat.
