Vancouver is a unique city when it comes to outdoor activities for kids. Families can frolic along sandy beaches, dine in bustling downtown cafes, and ski down powdered mountain slopes – all in the same day!

Equally as diverse is the city’s balance between boisterous urban destinations and quiet rural dwellings, situated only minutes apart.

For a taste of the country, local families love to play amongst the swoon-worthy park-like surroundings of Maplewood Farm, but it’s not just about the picturesque scenery. Here are some of the many must-do activities for kids to enjoy at North Vancouver’s only remaining farm.

We’ve done the research for you busy folks with young kiddos. Use the intel to plan ahead for the next Vancouver sunny day!

5 Fun Things To Do With Kids In Vancouver When It’s Sunny

1) Pet the animals at Maplewood Farm
In the 1920s, Maplewood (405 Seymour River Place) was a working dairy. Today, it’s one of greater Vancouver’s best spots for networking with some feathered and/or furry friends including goats, sheep, pigs, Shetland ponies, miniature horses and New Zealand bunnies. You can even schedule a pony ride. Situated near Mount Seymour, Maplewood is about a 20 minute drive from downtown Vancouver. Deets on hours and admission here.

2) Play mad scientist at Science World’s new outdoor Ken Spencer Science Park
Don’t get me wrong, it’s really entertaining inside Science World, but the new Ken Spencer Science Park is radically playful in a characteristically Vancouver way. All the activities focus on green initiatives–a.k.a. environmental science. Watch an outdoor science show, learn about city farming, check out vertical gardening, meet the resident chickens and discover the science of water, transportation and waste. It’s veg dressed up as dessert. The kids will eat every last bite. Continue reading:

Maplewood Farm – A Farm “Petting Zoo” for Kids

Kids love animals, but there aren’t a lot of options in Vancouver for getting your kids up-close-and-personal with animals that aren’t someone’s pet (the skunks trolling your neighbourhood after dark don’t count). There’s the amazing Vancouver Aquarium, of course, and the Greater Vancouver Zoo (in Aldergrove), but neither let the kids touch the animals. For that, you have to go to Maplewood Farm in North Vancouver.

The only remaining farm on the North Shore, Maplewood Farm may be best described as a “petting zoo” for farm animals; it’s a popular Vancouver kids’ attraction aimed at children under 10. Home to over 200 animals and birds, Maplewood Farm lets kids pet the goats, feed the rabbits and ducks, and visit cows, sheep, horses, pigs, chickens, and birds. It’s likely to be the closest your urban kid gets to an actual farm experience, and it’s just 20 minutes away from downtown Vancouver.
