Vancouver Chinatown Night Market Opens May 18, 2012

This Victoria Day weekend marks the summer-season opening weekend for two of the three Greater Vancouver summer night markets: the Richmond Night Market (back for 2012 at 8351 River Rd., near the River Rock Casino) and the Vancouver Chinatown Night Market. (The other Richmond market—the Summer Night Market at 12631 Vulcan Way—opened last weekend, on May 11.)

While the two Richmond night markets duke it out for best “big” summer night market, the Vancouver Chinatown Night Market can pride itself for offering something the other markets can’t: a true, intimate neighbourhood feel, right in the heart of historic Chinatown.

Top Chef Canada’s Trevor Bird to open Fable restaurant this May

Top Chef Canada's Trevor Bird

I took a peek inside Fable, the new restaurant by Top Chef Canada competitor Trevor Bird, which is set to open in Kitsilano in mid May. Trevor was happy to sit down and talk about this welcome addition to the Vancouver restaurant scene. He even shared some intel on Top Chef Canada Season 2. Of course, Trevor is sworn to secrecy over the Top Chef Season 2 winner.

It’s no surprise that Top Chef Canada, which premiered April 2011, swiftly became the top-rated series in Food Network Canada’s history. Season 2 launched March 12, 2012 and airs Monday evenings at 10pm. 7 of 13 episodes have shown so far. 8 of 16 chefs remain, including Trevor. I can’t help speculating that winners receive cash prizes and a new restaurant takes investment.

Find out more about behind-the-scenes action during Top Chef Season 2, Trevor and Trevor’s new restaurant – Fable – after the jump. Continue reading:

New Night Market to Open in Richmond this Summer

Greater Vancouver’s night market scene just got a little hotter.

A new Asian-style night market has been approved for this summer in Richmond, next to the River Rock Casino (see map below).  The Richmond Night Market opens May 18 and runs through Oct. 8, featuring 88 vendors serving authentic Asian cuisine, plus more than 200 vendors selling merchandise. It’s open Fridays and Saturdays from 7 p.m. to midnight and Sundays from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m.

The new market joins the Lower Mainland’s two other existing night markets:  the Summer Night Market on nearby Vulcan Way in Richmond and the Chinatown Night Market on Keefer Street in downtown Vancouver.   The night market phenomenon, which caught on over the last decade, has grown into a summer staple for many Vancouverites: a unique chance to sample authentic Asian cuisine, browse “designer” goods from overseas and take in some live Asian pop or karaoke.

Details about the new Richmond Night Market are still emerging.  But it’s already got a few things going for it.  Continue reading:

Top 5 Holiday Craft Markets in Vancouver

Vancouver Christmas Market

Believe it or not, even though there are still lots of Jack-o-lanterns from Halloween on the streets, holiday season is almost upon us.  With Christmas less than two months away, thoughts are already turning to gift giving.  And one of the best ways to score one-of-a-kind gifts in Vancouver is by shopping one of the city’s holiday craft markets.

Now, pretty much everybody knows about the big Circle Craft market, which takes over the Vancouver Convention Centre for a whole week from Nov. 9-13.  But there are plenty of other choices: big or small; whether you’re looking for fine art or dirt cheap, handmade decorations.

I’ve listed 5 markets below, but I want to hear from you:  Do you have a favourite holiday craft market in Vancouver?  Please let us know below.

Looking for alternatives to shopping at the mall?  The new Portobello West market coming to Olympic Village might be the answer.

Portobello West has been around for years in Vancouver, although it sometimes flies under the radar.  It’s a monthly market that brings together dozens of up-and-coming artists and clothing designers to sell their wares. The concept is borrowed from the original Portobello Market in London, which showcases hundreds of the country’s top designers.
