Chinese New Year 2012: Five fab regional events

Chinese New Year (Lunar New Year) is approaching faster than the beat of a lion dance. I should know; I just lost half an hour watching the Lion Dance Championships on YouTube.

The first day of the Year of the Dragon is January 23 and the festivities keep rolling for another 15 days. Dana covered Vancouver’s packed Chinese New Year event schedule, including the parade in Chinatown January 29. Thanks to the region’s robust Chinese-Canadian population, there’s a lot of celebratory events outside of Vancouver too.

Vancouver Boxing Day sales start early on the web

True, pre-Christmas sales have been building steam for the last few years, but nothing beats Boxing Day price slashing. Sales start Dec. 26, one of the most frenzied shopping days of the year, and continue through the end of the week.

For many, the day after Christmas is about squeezing in one more Scrabble victory against your little brother, or catching a family movie. For others, Christmas presents are just an amuse bouche before the main shopping meal Dec. 26.

H&M now open in Metropolis at Metrotown

Attention mall rats: a 25,000 sq. ft. H&M recently opened doors in Metropolis at Metrotown occupying what used to be about a dozen separate retail spaces. I don’t like to queue, so I skipped the opening day Oct. 13, when hordes of urban and suburban Vancouver shoppers lined up for access to the new, super-sized store in BC’s largest shopping centre. I did check out the Metropolis H&M later on, and here’s what I found out:

With all the amazing local shopping in Vancouver, it’s not often that I feel like going to a mall. But there are definite advantages to mall shopping: it’s indoors (so no worry about the weather), it’s all-inclusive (everything you need in one place), and the parking is (usually) free. And when it comes to mall shopping in the Lower Mainland—all of B.C., actually—there is one place you have to see to believe: Metropolis at Metrotown.
