As Vancouverites know all too well, the mathematical odds of finding a taxi on New Year’s Eve in Vancouver are pretty close to zero. Fortunately, taking transit should be easier (and cheaper) than ever this year.

Translink is offering free, extended service starting on New Year’s Eve and continuing into the wee hours of New Year’s Day. The bumped-up transit offering starts at 5 p.m. on Dec. 31, 2015, and goes to 5 a.m. on Jan. 1, 2016. The best part: It won’t cost you a thing during that time period.

The SkyTrain will be running more frequent evening trains and also extending service by approximately one hour. The last trains will be departing Waterfront Station at 2:05 a.m. (Canada Line), 2:16 a.m. (Millennium Line) and 2:20 a.m. (Expo Line). Continue reading:

Vancouver is about to party like it’s 1992.

That’s the last time a public New Year’s Eve celebration was held in the downtown core. And it looks like this year’s bash is going to blow that one away.

NYE Vancouver is all set to take over Canada Place for a New Year’s Eve party to remember, Dec. 31.  The waterfront fete features live music, food trucks, family-friendly fun, a special paid licensed zone, not one but two countdowns, and of course some pyrotechnics to cap off the night.

The festivities kick off at 6 p.m. sharp on Canada Place Way, near the Coal Harbour waterfront, between Howe and Burrard streets. Some of the city’s hottest bands will be rocking out on the 102.7 The PEAK Stage, entertaining crowds all the way to midnight. Meanwhile, revellers can nosh on street eats from Vancouver’s top food trucks. Special exhibitions will keep the party pumping, and you can also expect plenty of on-site broadcasts from news teams covering the event.  Continue reading:

Looking to paint the town red on New Year’s Eve? Vancouver offers plenty of options for New Year’s Eve revellers who like to party in style. While some events are sold-out by now, a search of Craigslist or popular resale websites may just turn up a few last-minute tickets.

Quite possibly the swankiest affair in the city, the Shangri-La Gala is held inside the 5-star, 62-storey Shangri-La Hotel in the heart of downtown.  The lightly Asian-themed party features canapes from the kitchen of Michelin-starred chef Jean-Georges, as well as a midnight champagne toast.  The party spreads over four rooms and a grand ballroom and features two of Vancouver’s top DJs. All of this high-class fun will set you back $120 (guys 25 or older; ladies 21 or older).
