Counting Down the Hours!

Normally, when you walk the streets of Downtown Vancouver before 7.00am, you are lucky if people make eye contact with you. It is not that people are rude, typically we are huddled in our coats, sipping on our coffee, focusing on the day ahead. It was a completely different vibe this morning.

Downtown Vancouver was electric. Even at 6.30am, there were people everywhere, smiling, laughing, saying hello. It was fantastic.  Athletes, officials, visitors, everyone was pumped for the day ahead.  Why? Because this Clock is finally out of days. The Olympic Countdown clock was installed 3 years ago on the lawn of the Vancouver Art Gallery and now it is counting down the HOURS until the start of the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games.

My Olympic Diary: Riding Along with the Torch Relay

Serge from GM, my guide for the day.

Yes people that’s right. Your eyes are not deceiving you. You are not getting old.  You are not imagining things. You are reading correctly. I, Miss Christina Wallaert, Toronto resident, most ordinary person in the world, was extended an invitation to do a ride along with the Olympic Torch Relay convoy with Serge from GM, one half of the Twitter combo @GM_ArtAndSerge.

On the morning of December 27th, I met Serge for the beginning of my ride along.  We left from London, ON, located 2 hours west of Toronto, and made our way to Stratford, ON. Along the way I got to ride in the GM Silverado and be a part of the Olympic Torch Relay convoy. I also got to hear some inside information about how the convoy works and how Art and Serge, both employees of GM, keep all the vehicles in the convoy running.

My Olympic Diary: Chasing the Torch Relay

Fireworks at Toronto Torch Celebration.

Last week was a very exciting week for me, in addition to my birthday; the Olympic Torch Relay came to town!  Is it coincidence you ask, that the Torch Relay would fall in the same week as my birthday?  I would like to think it is Olympic karma!

The first Torch Relay I saw was in Toronto on December 17th.  There were tons of people downtown lining the streets as well as waiting at the Torch Celebration site, Nathan Phillips Square.  We missed the Torch on Yonge Street but managed to catch it in time to see Vicky Sunohara, Olympic Women’s Hockey Gold Medallist carry the torch into the Celebration and light the cauldron.  A series of performances followed, ending with a spectacular fireworks show.  It was freezing out that night but all the people gathered in Nathan Phillips Square kept out the cold.  Check out my Journey to Vancouver 2010 – Diary of a Fan blog for a more in-depth post.
