Products made within tight parameters tend to show more creativity. Take food carts, for example. Compress the production space and the results are original and irresistibly tasty.

The same can be said for the fashion industry. Vancouver’s pioneering Eco Fashion Week, which kicks off April 21 in Vancouver’s downtown Robson Square, is another stellar example. Ask designers to use sustainable practices in product development, and you get wearable, chic fashion made in really comfy fabrics. We’re not talking about hippie hemp. If you want hemp or granola, Eco Fashion Week founder Myriam Laroche advises you to head to the snack bar.

Eco Fashion Week is in its sixth season this year and has tons of free and ticketed events. Expect glamourous runway shows featuring green designers (local and international), fashion industry panels, and free seminars running through April 24. This year, Eco Fashion week overlaps with Earth Day on April 22; attending the stylish Robson Square events is a great opportunity to get out and celebrate our green city.

With all the good-looking fun, it can be hard to choose what to attend. Find Eco Fashion Week 6th Edition schedule highlights after the jump.  Continue reading:

Public Karaoke

You know that expression, “go sing it from the rooftops”? Well, here’s your chance to do just that – except replace “rooftops” with “the centre of Vancouver’s downtown core”.

This upcoming Sunday, the public (read: you) is invited to take part in a very communal sing-along. The Vancouver Public Space Network, along with Urban Republic Arts Society have arranged a karaoke kiosk for those brave and bold individuals who have no qualms about belting out their favourite tunes in front of a street full of strangers.

How it works: A Karaoke Kiosk is set up at this Sunday, August 19th from 2 pm – 6 pm (meaning there’s a good shot you’ll get your song in) at Robson Square between Hornby and Howe. The outdoor booth lets you choose from hundreds of songs in seven different languages from a touch screen display. It’s completely free – meaning you don’t have to tip the host – and everyone is welcome.  Even if you sing off-key.

Time to lace up the skates.  Today is the official opening of the ice rink at Robson Square (even though it’s actually been open to skaters since last Thursday).

It’s completely free to use, though it will cost you $4 if you need to rent a pair of ice skates, plus $2 for a helmet.  Both are free, however, for kids 12 and under.  The rink is open from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Sunday-Thursday, with extended hours to 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.  It will remain in operation until February. Free Ice Skating at Robson Square

Since its re-opening for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, the Robson Square Ice Rink (located at 800 Robson Street, across from the Vancouver Art Gallery) has reclaimed its spot as a beloved Vancouver winter tradition. The open-air ice rink is the only spot for outdoor ice skating in Vancouver (the next nearest outdoor rink is on Grouse Mountain), and it’s completely free!

Weather permitting, the Robson Square Ice Rink’s 2011 grand opening will be December 1, 2011.
