Free Ice Skating Returns to Robson Square

GE Ice Plaza @ Robson Square

Time to lace up the skates.  Today is the official opening of the ice rink at Robson Square (even though it’s actually been open to skaters since last Thursday).

It’s completely free to use, though it will cost you $4 if you need to rent a pair of ice skates, plus $2 for a helmet.  Both are free, however, for kids 12 and under.  The rink is open from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Sunday-Thursday, with extended hours to 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.  It will remain in operation until February. Free Ice Skating at Robson Square Returns December 1

Free Ice Skating at Robson Square

Since its re-opening for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, the Robson Square Ice Rink (located at 800 Robson Street, across from the Vancouver Art Gallery) has reclaimed its spot as a beloved Vancouver winter tradition. The open-air ice rink is the only spot for outdoor ice skating in Vancouver (the next nearest outdoor rink is on Grouse Mountain), and it’s completely free!

Weather permitting, the Robson Square Ice Rink’s 2011 grand opening will be December 1, 2011.

Free Ballroom Dancing in Robson Square

Photo: DanceSportBC

Last week, when I wrote my post on 10 Free Things to Do in Vancouver This August, I got lots of great comments adding more “summer freebies” (as Remy calls them) to my list. There was one in particular I just had to write about (I know what I’ll be doing on my next “date night”): Free ballroom dancing in Robson Square.

Organized by DanceSportBC, this free dance series happens Friday nights in August and includes a ballroom dance lesson at 8pm, show dances at 9pm and 10pm, and a chance to dance the night away under the iconic dome at Robson Square, the heart of downtown Vancouver. It’s all free, and all skill levels are welcome; you don’t have to have any prior ballroom dance experience to participate!

Vancouver by Trolley – Stop 10 Blue Horizon

Vancouver’s Robson Street is famous for a reason. Not only does it have boutique shops and designer stops along each block, but it’s also one of the most bustling downtown areas in the city. Robson has something for everyone from kids to 20 somethings, business types and vacationers. Continue reading:

Vancouver by Trolley – Stop 9 Sutton Place

I luckily chose one of the sunny days to be a tourist this week and hopped off the Trolley at Stop #9, the Sutton Place, to explore what the bustling corner of Burrard and Robson had to offer.

As it happened to be just before noon, I happily stopped for lunch at the now infamous Japa Dog Hot Dog Stand, on the corner of Smithe and Burrard, in front of the Sutton Place Hotel. Japa Dog offers a wide range of selection from your normal hot dog to delicious bratwurst plus combinations, and has quite the local following. As there is often a line down the street for this stand, I expected to be waiting quite some time but must have just missed the lunch crowd. Continue reading:
