Vancouver by Trolley – Stop 4 Vancouver Art Gallery

This is the fourth of a series of blog posts, detailing some of the many things to do along the Vancouver Trolley line. This article is cross-posted on the Vancouver Trolley blog.

It was another beautiful day here in Vancouver as I hopped off the Trolley at stop #4, at the Vancouver Art Gallery. My first visit was to Robson Square, a host to various community events throughout the year. Currently the Square features a free ice rink that is open to the public daily until February 28th, 2011. This is a great area because it is in the hub of downtown, connecting Robson Street to Granville and beyond. This is also a great place to find street vendors selling jewelry, paintings, clothing and food.

Next I visited the Gallery Cafe for a cup of coffee and a snack before roaming through the Gallery Store. The Store has a wonderful selection of exhibit related goodies, but also sells everything from books, glasses, t-shirts and stationary. Admittedly, if I’d known about the Store’s eclectic collection before Christmas, I could probably have done most of my shopping there, while picking a few things up for myself as well. Olympic Anniversary Celebrations Kick Off in Vancouver

The streets were alive with Olympic spirit once again in downtown Vancouver for the one-year anniversary of the 2010 Winter Games. I found myself on Robson St. and Granville St. finding golden moments in rainy conditions and somehow ended up on journey leading me towards a gold medal.

Robson Square was full of people enjoying free skating and live music. While I was there I thought I saw a gold medal. Alas, it was not but a noble medal none the less.

Holiday Skating at Robson Square

Over the holiday break, bring your skates and sense of balance to Robson Square for free skating and live music!

Robson square is in the heart of the city on Robson St. (between Howe and Hornby). The outdoor skating rink is now open until the end of February 2011, including Christmas Day (noon to 5:00 p.m.) and there is live music (6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.) until Christmas Eve.

Last Call for Olympic and Paralympic Fun

Sunday marks the end of more than a month of Olympic and Paralympic revelry in Vancouver. After that, the banners come down, the athletes pack up and the pavilions close their doors for good.  But beautiful weather promises to make Sunday a perfect time to get your last Olympic kicks at attractions in and around the city.

Just one word of advice. Set your alarm clock.

Olympic Fun without the Lines: Paralympic Opening Day in Robson Square

14-time Olympic gold medalist Chantal Petitclerc takes the Paralympic flame at Robson Square.

Only in the wake of an event like the Olympics could this scene make sense.

I was in Robson Square this afternoon for the opening day of the Paralympic Games, which have brought 600 athletes from 175 nations to town for 10 days of competition. At the base of the city’s now famous urban zipline, strung high above downtown Vancouver, a queue had formed. I watched as a group of girls asked the attendant how long the wait would be. His answer: 2 1/2 hours.

“That’s not bad at all,” one of them said, right before sprinting to the back of the queue.
