Giant sharks, matchstick cars and meteorites at Science World’s Ripley’s exhibit!

Before the Internet, Ripley’s Believe It or Not was the world’s most trusted source for weirdness.

Robert Ripley (1890-1949) was a famous collector of oddities, anomalies, and freaky stuff. In the 1930s and ’40s, his discoveries were adapted into a popular radio show. Later, newspapers ran illustrated depictions of discoveries from his collection as part of the funny pages.

Beginning tonight (Jan 25), Science World (1455 Quebec St.) is presenting an exhibit based on Ripley’s discoveries. The Science of Ripley’s Believe It or Not! “celebrates the wonders of science and nature,” according to a media release. The exhibit includes “real artefacts, experiments, touchable specimens, along with computer interactive and multimedia experiences.” It runs until April 22. Here is some of what you can expect.

Like the sound of a low thunderclap rumbling in the distance, I could hear it. Shrieks and squeals, pure unadulterated joy! Feeling inquisitive I continued my afternoon stroll along the False Creek Seawall searching for the source of the commotion. Low and behold, just north of Telus World of Science I stumbled upon Vancouver’s newest and perhaps most popular outdoor playground; a veritable beehive of activity to say the least.

If your kids have seen the animated movie Over The Hedge, then they know how dangerous it can be for wildlife to safely navigate their way through suburban sprawls and emerge unscathed.

A newly-launched project – the Sharing Space with Wildlife Exhibit – was erected this week at Science World’s Ken Spencer Science Park, with a mission to educate youth and their families on the safety issues that impact wildlife as they try to survive life surrounded by humans and city dwellings. Here’s what you can expect from this 600 ft. interactive exhibit that now calls Science World home.

Kids In Vancouver: 3 Reasons To See Dream Big: Engineering Our World

When I was invited to see a preview of the latest IMAX movie, Dream Big: Engineering Our World, I was weary of the subject matter. I didn’t think I’d be able to sit through 45 minutes of what I thought would be a documentary about engineering – exploring the technical ins and outs of some of our world’s buildings and bridges doused in enough mathematical and scientific jargon to put me to sleep. But I was so very wrong. Not only did I love every moment of the film, but I left with tears in my eyes and an overwhelming desire to tell everyone I know to see the latest OMNIMAX release at Science World.

Here are 3 reasons why you need to grab your kids and head to Science World to see this heartwarming, tear-jerking, action-packed film – about the exciting world of engineering.
