A new Star Wars movie can only mean one thing. Well, actually, it can mean a lot of things.

But one of the side-products of The Force Awakens, the hugely successful 2015 addition to the Star Wars movie canon, is burlesque routines inspired by the adventures of Han Solo, Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia. And it looks like April is going to give fans plenty of opportunity to see half-naked Stormtroopers as both a local company and a U.S.-based troupe bring some raunch to the family-friendly franchise.

The force is with … Vancouver.

Japan’s All Nippon Airways has announced that Vancouver will be the destination for the inaugural flight of its unique R2-D2 themed aircraft. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner has been painted to look the Star Wars movie character as part of a promotional deal between the airline and Walt Disney, which now holds the rights for Star Wars movies.

The R2-D2 aircraft will swoop into Vancouver on Oct. 18 as part of its debut flight from Tokyo to Vancouver (officially, that’s ANA Flight 116). It’s unclear whether R2-D2 will be making regular stops in the city or report for duties in other parts of the galaxy.

It’s all part of a Star Wars blitz by Japan’s largest airline in the lead-up to the release of the latest instalment in the film franchise, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, slated for this December in North America. Continue reading:

Grab your lightsabers. Star Wars is officially coming to Vancouver.

Industrial Light & Magic, the George Lucas-founded effects company that handles the Star Wars movies, has put down roots in Vancouver’s historic Gastown neighbourhood.  The company currently has some 130 employees and will be ramping up with up to 200 additional employees by this summer to handle the latest Star Wars trilogy.

The Gastown effects studio will be responsible, in part, for bringing the new Star Wars: Episode VII movie to life.  Scheduled for release in December 2015, the movie is part of the third trilogy of Star Wars movies.  It takes up where 1983’s epic Return of the Jedi leaves off.

The studio will occupy the 30,000-square-foot space on Water Street (not far from the iconic Gassy Jack statue) that formerly housed Pixar, according to an article in the Vancouver Sun.  While the initial focus of work will be on Star Wars: Episode VII, plans are for the studio to spend the next eight-10 years on Star Wars projects, including Episodes VIII and IX of the new trilogy.
