On these long, dark nights it’s helpful to take solstice in the fact that we’re almost more than half way to summer! If you take a trip down memory lane to last summer, you may recall spending a warm, summer evening checking out the local Vancouver food trucks and dining “a la cart” (pun intended) while watching the sun setting from English Bay.

Oh, it’s still January you say? It’s raining out, you say!? Fear not, Vancouverites are known for their ability to adapt and thrive on these dreary, wet days. For a little taste of summer in the winter, you’ve got to check out the much-anticipated Street Food City Festival that will be happening from January 23 – 29, 2017 in Downtown Vancouver.

Food truck lovers, get your appetites ready. Street Food City is returning to downtown Vancouver.

For the fifth year in a row, the Vancouver Art Gallery Plaza is being transformed into a smorgasbord of indulgent food cart fare for Street Food City, Jan. 16-Jan. 24, part of the 2016 Dine Out Vancouver Festival. This year, no fewer than 20 of Vancouver’s top food trucks will gather on the plaza, offering street eats fans a one-stop shop to fill up on the best the city has to offer.

The food cart “pod” idea was introduced in Vancouver back in 2012, building off of models in other cities like Portland, where food trucks regularly congregate in huge clusters to offer diners more options. In the years since, Vancouver’s own street food scene has exploded, and there are now more than 100 trucks across the city offering everything from Salvadorian pupusas and Australian meat pies to wood-fired pizzas, perogies and Korean-style bibimbap. It’s hard to believe that it was only in 2010 that Vancouver loosened municipal by-laws to allow street food to be sold in the city.  Before that, pretty much all you could get on the streets was hot dogs and popcorn.

Since then, we’ve come an awful long way.  There are now more than 100 permitted street food vendors operating on the streets of Vancouver.  On any given day, you might find Salvadorian pupusas, Australian meat pies, wood-fired pizzas, perogies, Korean-style bibimbap or dozens of other dishes being hawked curbside.

But, as any true street food lover knows, we’ve still got a ways to go.  Continue reading:
