Part III: Patio to Entertain the Cast of Portlandia

As much as we love to hate on hipsters, there’s something about that don’t-care-but-really-I-do lifestyle that’s endlessly intriguing. Though we might claim otherwise, dozens of Vancouverites have professed to me their love of Portland – and with its rich craft beer scene, street food frenzies and strong hipster culture, our cities are more similar than we care to admit. So for this week’s patio test, we ventured out in search of Vancouver patios that would elicit rousing approval from the cast of hit show Portlandia (i.e. “They’re cool, I guess.”). Hipsters and those who love them: take note.

72-Room Halloween Party Planned for Vancouver’s Burrard Hotel

Vancouver tends to go a bit over the top for Halloween.  We’ve grown used to seeing haunted houses, train rides, trollies, amusement parks, etc.  But how about a whole haunted hotel?

The entire Burrard Hotel will be transformed into a 72-room Halloween party this Oct. 26.  Approximately 1,000 guests are expected for the adult-themed Halloween Social, which will feature live music and a dance floor, multiple bars and whole hotel’s worth of spooky rooms to explore.

Guests are “strongly encouraged” to come in costume, according to party organizers, XSocial.   Continue reading:

Burrard Hotel Takeover – the video

On June 15, 2013, Color Magazine took over the Burrard Hotel in downtown Vancouver and installed a one-of-a-kind ramp, with bands, djs and over 24 different artists, to celebrate the culture of the city and announce the list of talented skateboarders confirmed to attend “Jamcouver 2013“, happening Aug. 3rd at Sunset Beach.

Staycations are more common than you’d think. I know because I looked up “staycation” and it was so legit, it was included in a real dictionary. If you don’t believe me, see for yourself. Whether you’re too swamped with work to leave town, can’t be bothered to clean your own apartment, bored with rainy season or looking for a special date night, there are some great hotels in town for an overnighter.

What makes an excellent staycation venue? A staycation hotel must have at least one of these elements: strong ambiance, awesome food/drinks and a better location than your own place. Read on to see my picks.
