Ryn Weaver at VENUE, November 1 (Ticket Giveaway!)

Shortly before starting work on her debut album, Ryn Weaver chanced upon an image of the tarot card The Fool: a man optimistically walking off a cliff. So when the California-bred, New York City-based 22-year-old started shaping the songs that would make up her debut, she decided to capture the spirit of that image and use her dreamy lyricism to spin a story of her own wanderings. “So much of my album has to do with running away and refusing to settle in one place,” Weaver explains. “It’s about the good and the bad of going out on your own.”

Win tickets to Vancouver Dine Out Fest’s wildest party – Dinner at the Birdcage, Jan 31

Combine great food and cocktails, a New Orleans-style supper club and Vancouver’s most fabulous drag queens and what do you get?

Quite possibly one of the can’t-miss events of the 2013 Dine Out Vancouver Festival (For details on how you can win free tickets, read on).

On Jan. 31 the Vancouver FanClub hosts Dinner at the Birdcage, a culinary drag spectacular starring the city’s celebrity drag queens.  Over a three-course dinner and cocktails, soak up the sights and sounds of 11 outrageous performance numbers on FanClub’s stage from the likes of drag legends Joan-E, Carlotta Gurl, Coco and others.

Haven’t been to FanClub yet?  The brand new venue on Granville Street brings together live music on one of the city’s best stages with a southern-style barbecue menu and great drinks.  French colonial doors, wood floors and a second-floor balcony looking down on the action all lend a New Orleans music hall feel.  It’s a fantastic (and still relatively undiscovered) place to grab a drink and a bite to eat and see some great live blues and jazz shows.

FanClub is serving a deluxe barbecue menu for Dine Out, the citywide restaurant festival running Jan. 18-Feb. 3 that features hundreds of discount menus, plus dozens of creative culinary events.   Continue reading:

Nelly Furtado at the Commodore, Jan 9 (Ticket Giveaway)

British Columbia’s homegrown international pop diva Nelly Furtado is coming to Vancouver, and you’ve got a chance to win a pair of tickets (more on that below).

Victoria, B.C.-raised Furtado is performing at the Commodore Ballroom Jan. 9 in support of her latest album The Spirit Indestructible.  This is the fifth studio album for the sultry songstress, who skyrocketed to fame on the strength of her 2000 debut album Whoa, Nelly and the singles Turn off the Light and I’m Like a Bird (I think that last one is still stuck in my head).  Furtado’s latest album sees her returning to her roots, with a mix of urban, alternative and reggae music, produced by the likes of Tiesto and Timbaland.

It’s been a long, strange odyssey for the singer, who grew up a B.C. girl outside of Victoria.  Born of Portuguese parents, her first performance came as a young child, singing a duet with her mother in church on Portugal Day.   Continue reading:
