Brief History of Protests at the Vancouver Art Gallery

Occupy Vancouver

Robert Redford didn’t bat an eye shooting his new film, The Company You Keep, next to the Occupy Vancouver protest, which started Oct. 15, and continues to the surprise of many on the lawn of the Vancouver Art Gallery. Santa, on the other hand, decided to reroute his annual parade. The Rogers Santa Claus Parade (Dec. 4) uses the gallery lawn for a Christmas Square, offering family fun and a drop-off spot for food bank donations.

I’ve started to list the top VAG protests in Vancouver history (from the Great Depression Relief Protest—where the unemployed actually lived inside the old VAG— to pro-cannabis rallies). Help me out by adding events I’ve missed.

Think you’ve seen all the Emily Carr masterpieces at the Vancouver Art Gallery? Big Raven, with those bold colours and shapes echoing aboriginal carvings.  Cedar, with its undulating sea of needles.  Zunoqua of the Cat Village, with its enigmatic totem in the foreground.

Well, you’re in luck.  21 paintings by Emily Carr spanning the length of her career – and never shown publicly before at the museum – are on display right now at the Vancouver Art Gallery as part of the new exhibit, Shore, Forest and Beyond: Art from the Audain Collection.

Last week, I finally had a chance to see the newest exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery (VAG): The Colour of My Dreams: The Surrealist Revolution in Art.

Once again, VAG has brought an outstanding, world-class exhibition to Vancouver. The Colour of My Dreams is the most comprehensive exhibition of Surrealist art ever to be shown in Canada; it features 350 works by leading Surrealist artists, including André Breton, Salvador Dalí, Max Ernst, René Magritte, Joan Miró, Alberto Giacometti, Leonora Carrington, Brassaï, André Masson, Edith Rimmington, and (my favourite) Man Ray.

Weekly Family Programming at the Vancouver Art Gallery. Photo: VAG

Vancouver schools are out for a two-week spring break March 21 – April 3, 2011, and there are so many options for things to do during the break that when I compiled my list of the Top 10 Things to Do for Spring Break in Vancouver I missed events at two of Vancouver’s most iconic institutions: Granville Island and the Vancouver Art Gallery.

Spring Break at Granville Island runs from March 19 – April 3 at Granville Island’s famous Kids Market. Inside the Market, kids of all ages can enjoy free potato arts and crafts from March 21 – April 3 and by donation face painting with “Beebop and Captain Bubbles” 12pm – 3pm daily from March 19 – April 3. Kids can also do ceramic and sand art Monday – Friday (schedule details here) for just $2 – $3.
