In today’s Instagram image culture, the pressures to be visually perfect are intense. Whether it be flawless selfies selling the latest beauty products or photos showcasing home décor, most people are constantly seduced by the images around them.

A recently launched exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery challenges the aesthetics of consumer culture, as well as explores how humans create artificial spaces away from nature.

Ready to stroll down Robson Street? (Tourism Vancouver/Nelson Mouellic)

Robson Street is Vancouver’s most popular shopping thoroughfare, bookended by major attractions BC Place Stadium and Stanley Park. One of Vancouver’s oldest commercial streets, it was once known as Robsonstrasse due to the high concentration of German shops that opened there after WWII. Today, Robson Street’s many visitors share the ‘hood with locals hurrying to work, sports fans surging towards the stadium, and international students grabbing a bite between classes.

This summer, the VAG features Vancouver’s first major exhibition of work by Alberto Giacometti

More Than 130 works showcase the genius of Alberto Giacometti in A Line Through Time. The Vancouver Art Gallery (750 Hornby St.) presents this special exhibition of work from June 16 – Sept. 29.

Along with work by the renowned artist, the VAG will feature examples of  “ancient inspirations” and work by his contemporaries. See below for more details.

“Moving Still” Traces Evolution of Self-portraiture Photography in India

Contemporary photography in India has been on the rise since wealthy figures like the Maharaja of Jaipur – India’s first “Photographer Prince” – started snapping “selfies” in royal court in the 1800s. The fascinating historical journey that traces the evolution of self-portraiture photography is explored in-depth at the Vancouver Art Gallery’s new exhibit, Moving Still: Performative Photography in India, running April 19 to September 2.

How often can you say that you were in a pillow fight with hundreds of other people? On Saturday, April 6, 2019, you can do just that at the Vancouver Art Gallery (along Georgia Street)! The annual Vancouver Pillow Fight is back and it’s ready for action.

“Organized” by Flash Mob Vancouver, the pillow fight just appears and then is gone with a flurry of feathers… It’s a half hour of mayhem, pillows, and pyjamas – the perfect combination for an afternoon in downtown Vancouver!
