The highly anticipated 15th annual Dine Out Vancouver launches tomorrow (cue the trumpets)! If you don’t already have restaurant reservations lined up, don’t despair. There is still plenty of availability to choose from among the 284 restaurants participating with prix fixe menus ($20, $30, $40).

As well, the over 100 food experience events are also promising to be a culinary blast! One I’m particularly looking forward to combines three of my favourite things: art, food and drink, and Granville Island.

Vancouver is blessed with access to incredible fresh seafood, which can be enjoyed in restaurants around the city. Part of what makes our seafood culture so special is an increased willingness to make sustainability a priority, both in consciousness and in action.

November has been designated Ocean Wise month! In honour of this celebration, the Vancouver Aquarium and Vancouver Foodster’s Food Talks are presenting “From Boat to Table: The Sustainable Seafood Supply Chain,” a fun, interactive, and educational event on November 2, 2016.

Vancouver’s pizza renaissance is in full swing.  A few years ago, it was hard to find anything other than spongy, bargain-basement pizza-by-the-slice in the city.  These days, however, Vancouverites have their pick of gourmet ‘za, from traditional Neopolitan styles to more inspired creations with a West Coast flair.

Now, the city’s top pizzerias are facing off for the coveted title of Vancouver’s best pizza.  As part of the Vancouver Foodster Best Pizza Challenge, 14 restaurants across the city are offering brand new, over-the-top pizza creations this month.  Options range from white pizzas topped with exotic fruits to fusion creations with albacore tuna.

In the true spirit of pizza, the winner will be determined democratically, by ordinary diners with a smartphone or an Internet connection.  Here’s how it works.  Visit as many of the 14 participating restaurants in Metro Vancouver as you can before July 15 and try out their specialty creations.  Then log onto the Vancouver Foodster page and vote for your favourites.

Here are just a few of the inspired pizzas battling it out this month:

Bianchi con fichi: Gastown’s trendy Nicli Antica Pizzeria offers up this unique white pizza, featuring fresh figs atop a blend of Grana Padano, buffalo mozzarella and gorgonzola cheeses.  Pies are finished with Serrano ham, arugula and balsamic reduction. Nicli Antica Pizzeria; 62 E. 12 Cheesecakes Face Off in Vancouver’s Cheesecake Challenge

White Chocolate Raspberry Cheesecake at Trees Organic Coffee

Will the prize go to the raspberry white chocolate cheesecake on graham crumb base . . . or the gluten-free vanilla bean apple pie cheesecake. . . or maybe even the obscenely  decadent hot fudge brownie cheesecake tart?

These confections and nine others are facing off this month in Vancouver Foodster’s inaugural Cheesecake Challenge.  And you’re the judge.

The cheesecakes are served in restaurants, cafes and bakeries throughout Metro Vancouver.  The idea is that you drop in throughout the month, try as many of the delicious offerings as you can and then vote for your favourites on the Vancouver Foodster website.

And while Vancouver isn’t especially known as a cheesecake town (that title traditionally goes to New York), the competition is looking pretty intense.  Here are a few of the top contenders: Continue reading:

Hungry? Try Vancouver’s Top 20 Poutines in the 2013 Poutine Challenge, thru Feb 28

So many poutines, so little time.

Some 21 different styles of poutine – the classic Quebecois dish of fries, cheese curds and gravy – are competing for the title of Vancouver’s best this month as part of the 2nd annual Poutine Challenge.  And you’re the judge.

Organized by foodie website Vancouver Foodster, the Poutine Challenge is a kind of people’s choice awards for the classic comfort food.  You go to as many of the participating restaurants as you can during the month of February, sample their poutines and then vote online for your favourites from Feb. 26-March 2.

According to the contest rules, poutine should be judged by “originality, creativity, uniqueness, traditional, non-traditional, price, value and most importantly taste.”

And judging from the lineup, there’s some stiff competition out there.  Here are just a few of this year’s standout poutines.

  • Stop by downtown’s New Orlean’s style Vancouver FanClub for their Pulled Pork Poutine, featuring pulled pork in a smoky bourbon barbecue sauce and cheese curds in chicken gravy, all garnished with mozzarella and chopped parsley.
