Is Club Meds the first great album out of Vancouver for 2015?

It certainly looks that way, as singer/songwriter Dan Mangan’s third full-length garners acclaim both here and oversees. So what makes Club Meds different from the singer/songwriter’s previous releases?

A couple of days ago I published a post listing a number of notable releases by Vancouver artists in 2014. I knew then that I’d miss a few, and local music scribe Alan Ranta was kind enough to point out two excellent local records that I hadn’t heard, Colin Cowan & the Elastic Stars’ Eye of Winter and the self-titled album from A Dada Plan is Free.

Vancouver Folk Music Festival returns to Jericho Beach Park for its 35th anniversary this Friday, July 13, through Sunday, July 15.

If you’ve never been, Folk Fest is the kind of grassroots, community-driven live music event where you’ll find old timers who’ve attended for 30 years rubbing shoulders with a fresh crop of university students who won’t miss a Dan Mangan show. It’s the mix of guests and performers that makes Folk Fest what it is.

The hotly anticipated Vancouver Folk Festival line up includes such talents as Dan Mangan, Ani DiFranco, Lucinda Williams, Hey Rosetta! and K’naan. The food cart line up is almost as impressive with 30 local vendors serving everything from organic ice cream to roast corn and jerk chicken.

Find out everything you need to know to attend after the jump. Continue reading:

Your Flickr photos put to music

I was given a copy of a CD from singer/songwriter Adrian Hartmann (Adi Hart) which included a folk song named “My Vancouver”. I thought I would use it as background music to showcase some of the great photos that have been submitted to our Flickr  photo pool.
