Arty Guava – Three Figures

Margaret Atwood. Margaret Laurence. Robertson Davies. Timothy Findley. These were the big names in Canadian Literature (CanLit) who emerged in the 1960s and 1970s and formed an initial literary canon.

Now in 2021, while these names continue to be highly recognized, new and diverse writers increasingly make up the national literary scene.

“They were the canon of CanLit. Clearly, that’s just not a good representation of who we are here in Canada, and I think finally, we’re catching up to that. The result is we get to add many, many different voices to that list of CanLit superstars,” says Leslie Hurtig, Artistic Director of the Vancouver Writers Fest.

2018 Writers’ Fest lineup includes Rachel Kushner, Gary Shteyngart and Jodi Picoult

Rachel Kushner comes to Vancouver with this year’s Writers Festival.

Rachel Kushner, Gary Shteyngart, and Jodi Picoult are among the boldfaced names coming to this year’s Vancouver Writers Festival (Oct. 15-21 at various locations on Granville Island).

The lineup also includes singer/songwriter Buffy Sainte-Marie and author Patrick deWitt (The Sisters Brothers). All told, the festival features over 100 authors from all over the world.

Five local writers to check out at this year’s Vancouver Writers Festival

Vancouver writer Del Bucchia appears at True Confessions and Tall Tales, along with Hera Lindsay Bird and Leanne Dunic (Oct 20 at 8:30 p.m., Revue Stage).

This year’s Vancouver Writers Festival features dozens of guests, from essayists to memoirists to poets. Included amongst the national and international talent are many local pencil-pushers (though perhaps “laptop-luggers” or “café-dwellers” might be more accurate). Here are a few worth checking out, along with their events.

The 30th Annual Vancouver Writers Festival (Oct. 16-22) is less than two weeks away, and some events are already sold out.

Fortunately, there are still plenty of events left that still have tickets available. Here are five we think are worth checking out, including a discussion about satire, another about what it’s like to be strangers in a strange (and getting stranger by the minute) land, and a chat about the art of memoir. (Note: most Vancouver Writers Festival events take place on Granville Island.)

Barbara Gowdy’s latest novel Little Sister is “intelligent and enthralling,” according to the Globe & Mail. The Canadian author is a guest at this year’s Vancouver Writers Festival.

Esteemed Canadian authors Margaret Atwood and Barbara Gowdy are among this year’s guests at the 30th annual Vancouver Writers Fest (Oct. 16-22). There are a number of notable authors appearing at the festival, as well as in stand-alone events beginning at the end of this month. Here are a few to watch for.
