Vancouver-based Robin Esrock is a renowned travel writer, author, speaker, and host of the OLN/CityTV/Travel Channel series, Word Travels. Former adventure columnist for the Globe & Mail, MSN, Vancouver Sun and others, Robin has MC’d the Explorer’s Club Annual Dinner in New York, written for publications including National Geographic Traveler, The Guardian and Chicago Tribune, and been profiled by everyone from the CBC to CNN. After traveling to over 100 countries, Robin turned his attention to Canada for his first major book, The Great Canadian Bucket List. Spanning all 10 provinces and 3 territories, Robin has created the definite guide to 115 experiences one must do, and can only do, in Canada before you die.

The first time I met local songstress Lisa Joyce, she was in her natural element: singing acoustically with her guitar on her lap. We were both attending “Nu Grass”, a (now defunct) weekly night organized by local musicians (including members of Black Mountain and Lightening Dust) who would gather in John Rogers Park to sing traditional folk songs. While I’m not exactly a musical person, I was struck and inspired by the joyfulness and ease Lisa exuded while she performed alongside the group. In the years since our musical meet up, I’ve seen her Lisa perform on several stages around town, both big and small. Yet the one thing that’s consistent is the uplifting energy she puts out when she’s singing. (It’s no surprise that she’s also a vocal instructor.) That will likely be evident when she takes the stage at the Media Club,  under her stage name Joyce Island, for her album release party on April 19. I recently spoke about what it’s like to be a singer/songwriter in Vancouver.

How long have you been a Vancouverite?
My whole life — this place will always be my home. Despite some time away travelling, I don’t think I could ever permanently move away from this spectacular city.

Occupation:
I am currently a Visitor Counsellor at Tourism Vancouver and a student at Capilano University in the Tourism Management Degree Program. I love the tourism industry — it’s so exciting, especially when you live in such a beautiful city, with so many activities to choose from. I’m very passionate about saying that we live in the most amazing place on earth, and I love sharing this with visitors that come into the centre.
