Vancouver TheatreSports League Generates Plenty of Canadian Guffaws in their New Show

Say the word “Canada” and a host of stereotypical associations, images, and even phrases probably come to mind (eg plaid shirts, Tim Hortons, hockey, excessive politeness, “eh” and “aboot”). And let’s be honest. Many of them are endearingly ridiculous.

In celebration of Canada 150, Vancouver TheatreSports League (VTSL) has a new show, Oh Canada – The True North Strong and Funny, which had me giggling incessantly. It’s cleverly, tongue-in-cheek hilarious.

Vancouver TheatreSports League Embraces Social Media Hilarity in #Nofilter – The LOL of TMI

For the longest time, I resisted the allure of social media, but now that I’ve given in, I’ve become an almost obsessive checker of Instagram and Twitter. My boyfriend usually has to pry my phone away from me before I’ll actually pay attention to what he’s trying to tell me about his day. How can he positively compete with photos of people’s food, cats, and latest outfit? I’ve avoided posting photos of us with puppy eyes on social media, but it’s only a matter of time …

If it’s all starting to become ludicrous to you as well, you should definitely check out Vancouver TheatreSports League’s (VTSL) new show that pokes fun at our current digital, social media crazed age.

Ho ho … ha? A new improv comedy show in Vancouver is promising to put an off-beat, off-kilter and laugh-out-loud funny spin on holiday theatre this Christmas season.

From the creative minds at Vancouver TheatreSports League comes Christmas Queen 2 – You Better Watch Out, on through Dec. 20 at the Improv Centre on Granville Island. This is the second incarnation of the Christmas Queen saga and has to rank among the weirdest, edgiest and most heartwarming holiday fare on offer in Vancouver this year.

The show is inspired by the venerable tradition of British pantomime or panto. This uniquely irreverent form of theatre is typically performed during the holidays and features plenty of characters in drag, lots of physical humour, plenty of ribald jokes and innuendo, some singing and, of course, a healthy dose of audience participation.   Continue reading:

TripImproviser_poster

Vancouver TheatreSports™ League (VTSL) new summer show, TripImproviser, has been extended until September 27. Inspired by suggestions from the audience and TripAdvisor reviews, the new show parodies travel experiences. From city to jungle, bungee jumping to bird watching, the possibilities are endless because it’s completely improvised and totally unpredictable.

Each night, a host interviews audience members to ask where they’re from or to share memorable travel experiences. In addition, the host may search TripAdvisor for inspiration. VTSL’s Mainstage Ensemble re-enacts the action onstage through scenes, songs and montages.
