Things to Do in Vancouver this Weekend: Feb. 22, 2018

This weekend you can watch people throw each other around in three very different ways. In descending order of gracefulness: BalletBC has a production of Romeo and Juliet, Compagnia Baccalà are circus runaways in town with a comedic and acrobatic show, and WWE and all of their break-away folding chairs arrive on Friday to inspire some glittery sign-making.

One of the biggest wine festivals in North America is coming to Vancouver.

The Vancouver International Wine Festival is set to bring 176 wineries from 15 countries to the city from Feb. 25-March 3. Some 25,000 wine lovers are expected to turn out for a full week of wine tastings, dinners, seminars and casual minglers at the Vancouver Convention Centre, as well as restaurants and hotels around the city.

The undisputed highlight of the wine fest, of course, is the one and only International Festival Testing.

For serious oenophiles and casual sippers alike, the massive tasting in the Vancouver Convention Centre – featuring 767 different wines from all over the world – is a must-attend gala. Continue reading:

Tickets have just gone on sale for the 35th Vancouver International Wine Fest.  For a full week (Feb. 25-March 3), the city will be awash in wine tastings and wine-paired dinners, lunches and brunches.  The focus this year is on those delicious California wines from south of the border, with a special highlight on everyone’s favourite white wine, Chardonnay.

The Wine Fest is jam-packed with 55 different events that draw some 25,000 attendees.  The most popular events tend to sell out fast, scooped up by Vancouver’s resident oenophiles.  While tickets are still available, here’s a quick look at 5 can’t-miss events this year.

International Festival TastingsThe uncontested highlights of the festival, these gala tastings featuring 176 wineries from 15 different countries are held in the waterfront Vancouver Convention Centre.  Thousands of guests pack the enormous ballrooms to sip and savour some 767 different wines, in an atmosphere that feels more like one big party than an ordinary wine tasting.  Vancouver Convention Centre.  Feb. 21, March 1, March 2; 7 p.m-10 p.m. $95 Continue reading:

Mother of All Wine Festivals Coming: March 28-April 3

Wine tastings have a reputation, not entirely undeserved, for being fairly formal, reserved affairs.   You make your way around the room, swishing, sniffing and – if you’re a real pro – even spitting.   Perhaps there will be light music in the background.  Perhaps some light appetizers will be served.  And so goes the evening – daintily sipping and musing over Cabernets and Pinots, trading tasting notes with wine buffs and, just maybe, getting the slightest of buzzes.

Now, throw all of those expectations out the window.  The International Festival Tasting – the highlight of the March 28-April 3 Vancouver Playhouse Wine Festival – is nothing like that.  This year 177 wineries from 15 different countries will be gathering inside a single grand ballroom at the Vancouver Convention Centre for the International Tasting.  More than 1,500 different wines will be on offer.  And packed inside – by the thousands – will be the liveliest bunch of winos you’ll probably ever see.
