Every year, around December 21, is the Winter Solstice, the day the earth’s axial tilt is farthest away from the sun, making it—for those of us in the north—the shortest day of the year.
Even before there was a Christmas, people around the world celebrated the Winter Solstice, making it one of the oldest winter holiday traditions.
On December 21, 2009, you can continue that tradition at the annual Winter Solstice Lantern Festival, organized by the Secret Lantern Society. Through brilliant uses of fire and light, the Lantern Festival celebrates not the solstice itself, but the return of light after the longest night of the year.
