February doldrums got you down?  Take a break from the blahs this weekend at Winterruption, the annual music, food and cultural festival on Granville Island, Feb. 22-Feb. 24

This is the eighth instalment of Winterruption, which draws thousands of people and this year includes a special celebration of Francophone culture, an outdoor street food festival with beer, a full weekend of live music at Performance Works, a Kids Zone and more.

Here’s a list of 6 can’t-miss free happenings at this year’s Winterruption:

Free French Wine TastingAny event combining “free” and “French wine” has to be a winner.  This tasting, part of the Francophone Festival, offers tipplers a sipping tour of France’s best, from rich Bordeaux to rustic Cotes-de-Rhones.  Feb. 22, 2 p.m.-5 p.m.; Liberty Wine Merchants; free.  

[ART]ifacts: The Granville Island StoryGranville Island is Vancouver’s center of artisan culture, with dozens of galleries and workshops turning out everything from fine jewelry to handmade brooms.  Join this guided, walking tour for a look at some of the island’s most enduring and innovative artistic landmarks and stories about the artists behind them.  Feb. 22-Feb. 24, 1 p.m. (tour is 45 minutes); starts at Kids Zone info booth; free.  Continue reading:

Late-Night Street Food Festival (with beer) coming to Vancouver, Feb 22-23

It’s the event street food junkies (and craft beer lovers) have been waiting for.

From Feb. 22-Feb. 23, Granville Island will turn into an after-hours party zone for the first Street Eats and Beats Festival.  The beer-garden-style outdoor event, held from 6 p.m. to midnight directly under the Granville Street Bridge, features six of Vancouver’s best food trucks, B.C. wine and beer from Granville Island Brewery and top DJs and performers.

Ticketholders will have the chance to sip, savour and get down at one of Vancouver’s hottest outdoor parties since the 2010 Olympic Games.  Here’s how it works.   Continue reading:

February 2012 is shaping up to be a month packed with things to do in Vancouver: This weekend is the inaugural City and Slope Festival (which includes Illuminate Yaletown), next week there are 10 Things to Do on Valentine’s Day, and at the end of February there’s the 7th annual Winterruption Festival on Granville Island.

Winterruption 2012 is a three-day festival loaded with all-ages fun. Celebrating both local and international artists of all disciplines, the festival has kids’ theatre and activities, art exhibitions from Granville Island’s many residents artists and artisans, live music presented by the Coastal Jazz and Blues Society, and foodie events from Edible Canada. Basically, if you love food, theatre, music, and arts, they’ve got you covered.

Sick of Winter? Winterruption Fest on Granville Island Starts Today

The name says it all.  Winterruption is an annual music and arts festival on Granville Island that’s meant to inject a little energy and color into the gloomy days of February.  The lively, three-day festival, which is in its sixth year and features a mind-boggling array of concerts, dance performances and theatre, starts today and runs through Sunday.

This year, up to 75,000 visitors are expected to descend on Granville Island, making the festival arguably the hottest game in town this weekend.   To help make sense of all the action, organizers have divided events into different categories: music, performances, arts, kids’ stuff and food.

Live music will be featured all day, mainly as free concerts,  and continue into the night with ticketed performances.  Headlining the concert series this year is Vancouver-based indie-pop band The Zolas, which offers a unique brand of “cryptic cabaret strut,” according to the Winterruption website
