Turn the Lights Out

I’m an armchair environmentalist, but taking a stand against global warming by joining millions of others in turning off the lights for Earth Hour sounds very, very do-able.

Starting in Sydney in 2007, Earth Hour 2009 is a global initiative with the goal of one billion “votes for Earth” (people turning off their lights for one hour).

In their words: Unlike any election in history, it is not about what country you’re from, but instead, what planet you’re from. VOTE EARTH is a global call to action for every individual, every business, and every community. A call to stand up and take control over the future of our planet. Over 74 countries and territories have pledged their support to VOTE EARTH during Earth Hour 2009, and this number is growing everyday.

Saturday, March 28th, 8:30-9:30 pm

In Vancouver, Yew restaurant + bar (pictured above) at the Four Seasons Hotel Vancouver is offering a special candle-lit menu, one in a sequence of candlelit Earth Hour dinners at Four Seasons around the globe. La Terrazza is also operating by candlelight from open to close with a special dinner menu.

Get ideas for a special night out in your area at the official Earth Hour site, or get creative and just enjoy some quality times with friends and family – watch the stars, tell ghost stories, or play board games by candlelight.

It’ll be the easiest way to take a stand all year.
