If you’re looking for a weekend mini-break, or a way to combine a trip to Vancouver with a trip to the U.S., why not hop on the scenic Amtrak Cascades train and head to Seattle for a few days? The train takes about four hours to make the journey from Vancouver to Seattle and the whole trip is lovely: Gorgeous views of the Pacific Northwest coast, perfect in any weather. (I actually find it more romantic when it’s grey and moody.)

My sister took the train last week from Vancouver to Seattle and she took these wonderful pictures of the views:

To get the side with the view—that’s the right-hand side on the trip south—get to the train station early; seat assignments are first-come, first-served. Along with the views, the trains have all the modern—and very Pacific Northwest!—amenities, including free Wi-Fi and snowboard, bike and ski racks.

The Amtrak Cascades train makes daily trips from Vancouver to Eugene, Oregon, with lots of stops in-between. It’s a great way to explore our region, no car needed!

UPDATED: As of August 19, 2009, there will be twice daily train service, part of a pilot program which will run through the 2010 Olympics.
