It may not have the grandeur—or the fame—of Vancouver’s two world-class parks, Stanley Park and Queen Elizabeth Park, but John Hendry Park, home of the serene and lovely Trout Lake, is definitely as beloved by locals, especially those with little kids and dogs.

Top 5 Reasons to Love Trout Lake & John Hendry Park

1. Your dog loves it! There are off-leash dog parks all around Vancouver, but I have never seen one as heavily populated by happy dogs of all shapes and sizes. If you’re looking for a place to play fetch-the-stick-in-the-lake or to meet other pups, this is the place!

2. Your kids love the beach! Trout Lake’s small, sandy beach is perfect for little swimmers and waders, since there are no waves and the water is warmer than the ocean’s. It has a playground—complete with toddler swings—too.

3. The smooth, even path around the lake is perfect for jogging, biking or walking at every fitness level.

4. It’s within walking distance of Commercial Drive. Which means it’s easy to combine a trip to the park with a trip to the Drive’s fabulous shops and international restaurants.

5. July’s Illuminares Lantern Festival! The annual lantern process (down the Drive) and festival in Trout Lake is one of the most beautiful spectacles Vancouver produces all year round.
