Free Jazz – Best FREE Venues for the Vancouver International Jazz Festival

Free concerts at the Market Stage on Granville Island, Vancouver International Jazz Festival

The annual Vancouver International Jazz Festival (June 25 – July 4, 2010) electrifies the whole of Vancouver by bringing some of the best jazz in the world to over 40 venues across the city, and a huge number of the over 400 shows and concerts are FREE.

So where are the Top 5 best places to catch FREE jazz during the Festival?

1. Gastown
A festival in its own right, the two-day, New Orleans-style Gastown Jazz (June 26 – 27) offers continuous music from performers like Dal Richards and OpenSouls in the midst of Gastown’s trendy bar-and-shopping district.

2. & 3 Yaletown’s David Lam Park & Roundhouse Mews
Another festival-within-the-festival, the outdoor stage at David Lam Park and the indoor venues at the historic Roundhouse will highlight the Festival’s most eclectic collection of top jazz, world music and contemporary artists. A perfect place to see the best in international music, catch studio workshops, hear the best in improvisation, and more.

4. Granville Island
Free jazz is everywhere on Granville Island, from Railspur Alley and Ron Basford Park to the Granville Island Brewery Taproom, but there are two venues that stand out: Market Stage and Performance Works. On a sunny day, you can’t beat the Market Stage, next to the Public Market. Grab lunch inside the market and enjoy an outdoor picnic with live music and one of the best views in the city. Raining? Head indoors to Performance Works.

5. Capilano Suspension Bridge
For sheer novelty and a jazz venue like no other, it’s hard to beat the outdoor concert series at that landmark summer attraction, the Capilano Suspension Bridge.
